So what you're saying is that we need to find an out-of-sector alien who loves singing, and then their music might be there?

You're stronger than you would be if you didn't know how to use those weapons. [With a little laugh] Klaus would have liked Cardalek fashion. Do you know ribbons? Broad ribbons, tied around your arms above the elbow, and streaming down almost to the floor. For parties. Dancing. Kaizen used to try to grab two people's when they were sitting and tie them together. I used to like them, but- [she shakes her head] definitely not practical.

Did you always just hate being told what to do? Some people are like that. They have to rebel against everything. I know you saw all the things wrong with Japan when others didn't, but did that come first, or did your rebellious feelings?

[What he says next makes her think that he's hopelessly naive, in his own way. Pirates.] Oda, I was thirteen when I joined the Tradelines. If a girl thirteen standard years old tried to become a pirate? It wouldn't matter what she tried to offer. They'd lie and make her a slave. They'd be... very cruel. Nobody would do it. You're talking about being a mercenary really, aren't you?

[She clicks her tongue.] It wasn't an excuse. You had a goal - changing Japan - and you used the resources you had towards your goal, including your inherited position. Throwing away the resources would have weakened you, and that wouldn't have hurt just you but everyone whose lives you wanted to improve. [Ari had been adamant when she left home that she'd take no Cardalek money, do everything on her own. Her reconciliation with her father changed her mind somewhat.]

There's nothing wrong with not being normal. Nobody who ever accomplished great things was entirely normal. Maybe one of the good things about this ship for you is that nobody's normal? We're all out-of-place, out-of-sector, and not everything that worked at home works here.
