There's maybe a dozen of the things, all frequently-read and very battered. A copy of Stardust is at the top in pride of place, but also included is a copy of Artemis Fowl (if Cass opens it, the Gnomish text has translations scribbled in the margins by a very neat hand), Wicked Lovely (heavily annotated, with many sections on faeries highlight and labeled 'Victorian lies', 'Wiccan lies', and very rarely, 'original idea'), Vampire High (the least read, but 'Liz Malloy' is scrawled on the corner of the cover), Hogfather (unaltered), Eragon (HEAVILY annotated with both the stories it stole from and with worldbuilding loopholes in the same neat handwriting as in the Artemis Fowl copy), Fragile Things (unaltered), The Tough Guide To Fantasyland ('Liz Malloy' is scrawled on the cover; heavily read), Vampirates (annotated with notes on what cheesy voices to use), Sabriel, Lirael, and Aborsen (unaltered, but tied together with twine so they don't get separated), and finally, hiding at the bottom of the stack, what turns out to be not a book but a book-sized stack of Playboy issues, tied together and clearly read far too often; some of the pages have come loose.

As for Cass's question...

"...I'm not sure. There's a lot of happy memories with these. Happy memories with people who were, fucking, awful human beings. But who were also victims as broken and ill-treated as I was. I'm not. I don't know."

Her voice sounds so small.
