"It's not bad to wear the weight of the past, so long as it doesn't kill you. That child will live, and they will miss the father they didn't have, but they will have a mother and a life. It may not be everything, but it is enough for most."

She wasn't much of a mother then. Children will take their own paths, good or bad, but usually between. Then, casually, he mentions- "I met my mother in my memories as well, though it was her. I miss her all the time, though she would hate being a passenger here."
