[open] the rain didn't come for one calendar year

Who: Skulduggery Pleasant and YOU!
What: Some rain-related shenanigans, also some specialty prompts for fellow flying enthusiasts!
When: July 9th thru the end of the month (I guess)
Where: Out and about, the chatterbox, and also way out there on the ocean
Warnings: There may be references to or overt descriptions of visual or auditory hallucinations. Eldritch madness is also a thing! Other than that, TBD
Notes: If you have a preference for 1b, let me know, otherwise I'll roll a die. Also for 1b, I'm not your mom, if you want to say your character can reach Skulduggery then come on up!!!
(I'll match tagging style!)

[private: Darcy + Dimitri] when the man with the seed catalogs darkened our door
[Why torture us? What does he gain from all of the fighting? Skulduggery has been turning over the question Palamedes posed to him for the entire day, trying to form a hypothesis with unreliable information. Pacing helps him lay some groundwork: he knows that their resistance is part of the Captain's plot. He knows that their infighting provides some valuable information. The reason for it all feels right there, on the tip of his metaphorical tongue, but no amount of restless moving seems to be doing the trick.

He wishes he had his old skull, still. It would be nice to have a like mind to talk to. But then he realizes he does have Darcy to reach out to. She has a strong, independent mind, thankfully one less distracted than his. Not only that, but she'd also had to deal with auditory mis-fires, too. She's more keenly suited to listening to his newest theory than anyone else.

That's what's led him to knock on Darcy's door right now, deciding it would be quicker than texting. The only problem is, he has no idea how late it is...]

1a. [rainy; out on deck] we sent him away, sent him away
[There's no better way to practice magic than to have tangible consequences for your mistakes. Skulduggery learned that recently (depending on your definition of recent), and it's worked out greatly in his favor. There are a few hours during the rain in which Skulduggery wanders from the promenade to the athletic deck and back again; it's less restless pacing than usual and more aimless wandering. The key thing of note is that he isn't carrying an umbrella, nor does he seem inclined to worry about the rain. He is, in fact, completely dry, thanks to capturing a thin sheet of air with his magic.

He makes no effort to tell anyone he's got this power, nor does he immediately offer it to people passing by. The only people that might get a helpful skeleton approach would be those stuck inside promenade shops, unwilling to risk the run from awning to awning back to the safety of the interior. Otherwise, Skulduggery will occasionally wind up side-by-side with somebody, commenting idly on their decision to be out in the rain. It's usually something along the lines of,]
Brave of you to enjoy the weather like this.

1b. [rainy; atop the world] i know you're waiting for the ironic ending
[The problem is, Skulduggery also misses rain. He hadn't realized how badly he had until that run-in with Darcy, and then he'd been too anxious to just go out and risk someone talking to him while he's under the water's influence. But there's a solution for every problem, and Skulduggery thinks he's found it.

The roof of the ship is an impossible spot to reach unless you have some serious climbing prowess, specialty magic, or the ability to fly. Skulduggery himself chooses the latter option, simply pushing at the air beneath his feet and rising until he's got a nice, clean view of absolutely nothing. Like a slippery, enameled dead planet. Unpopulated and rainy. Just perfect.

He only stays up here an hour or so, but it happens more than once in the month. He doesn't bother avoiding the rain, although he periodically dries his suit off to avoid the gross sensation of wet fabric against his bones.]

2. [either; chatterbox] i know you're waiting for the punchline
[Back at it again at the Krispy Kreme Chatterbox! Skulduggery isn't having a breakdown this time. Actually, he's found that he enjoys karaoke, given that he loves singing and listening to his own voice. He doesn't have to wrangle the machine anymore; he gets to sing his three-song set without complaints from the phantom peanut gallery.

Anyone who might come into the Chatterbox, however, will find themselves quickly walking into what feels like a solid wall. You see, Skulduggery has been practicing his air-based magic again, which has led the interior of the Chatterbox to secretly resemble a Pokemon gym. If you're planning on getting to Skulduggery (either to stop him from singing or to take a turn yourself), you better be prepared to climb over seats and walk head-first into invisible walls. The maze lets out right at the front row, guaranteeing that at least the stage is free of tricks.

If you do decide to navigate the maze, expect Skulduggery to actively cheer you on. After all, he designed it for you! If you chicken out or get stuck, just ask for help and he'll happily push you back to the doors to try again.]

3. [sunny; out on the ocean] i know you're waiting for the rain to come by
[There's one power that Skulduggery developed over his eleven months of hell that almost made being tortured by eldritch gods worth it. Skulduggery heads up to the athletics deck one sunny afternoon, hops over the railing, and then steps off into thin air.

Flying is one of the best powers an Elemental can develop, and one he'd been working at for years before his time-skip. Being able to do it now, to feel the air moving around him as lightly as a breeze, without being chased or hunted or running from something, is a rare and privileged delight. He flies in a mostly straight line, estimating the distance until he reaches the barrier. Just before that point, he redirects himself until he's sweeping a large, open circle around the ship itself. Still pacing, in a way, but at least this actually fills him with genuine delight. He hopes some version of himself upholds his promise to Valkyrie to teach her, because it truly is one of the greatest feelings in the world.]

[ Darcy's not the only one who's struggled with sleep aboard the ship. At least a couple of the insomniacs are her friends; on this occasion, she'd run into Dimitri while they were both out pacing like caged animals, and they'd retreated to her room with snacks to talk. Which mostly meant 'listening to Dimitri talk about the grain production of his home', but it was nice. White noise. She'd nearly nodded off to it when the knock comes at her door, and Darcy jolts back to wakefulness with her hand on her sword, and she rises to open it, casting a glance to Dimitri to ensure he had her back. She opened the door and- ]

Jesus- do you know what time it is?

[ Yep, that's Skulduggery. Darcy puts her sword back in the frog and gestures for him to come inside. He might notice it's not her usual rapier- it's an older looking sword, almost... viking? When did she get that? ]

Skulduggery, Dimitri, Dimitri, Skulduggery.

[Dimitri snaps to attention as Darcy does, cueing off her wariness -- there may well be other insomniacs aboard, but if Darcy was expecting anyone, she wouldn't be stalking for the door with one hand on her sword. He returns her nod, broken lampstand at the ready, and --

-- well.

At first he mistakes the skeleton for a vision, but it's dressed like another passenger, and Darcy's address proves it's not a product of Dimitri's mind. Then he wonders if he's managed to recast a living person as some sort of specter; it would be a first, but Dimitri has very little faith in his own perceptions at this point. Then Darcy makes her introductions, and he finally remembers -- this friend of hers is, in fact, a walking skeleton.

He drops into rest position and offers a quick bow.
]

Pleasure to meet you, Skulduggery. Darcy's told me a little about you -- I'm glad to make your acquaintance in person.

I do try and have a sleep schedule sometimes. And I also have a new roommate, so you'll have to actually message ahead next time.

[ She protests, but not too hard. Darcy flops herself back on the couch- behind her on the wall is a drawing on that was clearly done by Fio depicting the two of them. ]

If that's cool, Dimitri?

[ She gestures vaguely to her sword, ] magic sword bag, I'll explain it later. Is this a talk Dimitri can be in the room for?

[Well, now he's curious, and he's not exactly eager to go back to wandering the halls avoiding sleep. Still ... ]

I don't mind at all. But I don't wish to intrude -- if you need to talk privately, I'll get out of your hair.

[He pauses and takes a second look at Skulduggery.]

Um.

[ Darcy grimaces a little reflexively at the reminder of just how long they'd been here. But if it's something pertaining to Palamedes, then she can make a good guess that it's to do with the investigation. Good, familiar territory. ]

I mentioned it in my welcome speech. Which- as a thing for later, I want your help putting together like, a pamphlet or something of everything we know so we can get people up to speed when they get here and not just, season them with information whenever it comes up.

[ She snorts a little, ]

It's the first thing I tell people. 'Skeleton dude', 'trying to work things out' and 'don't scream at him, it hurts his feelings' in that order.

Um. That is, you don't have ... hair ... I could get out of ... I could have phrased that better. Anyway.

[Dimitri coughs, rubbing his neck. Fortunately for his embarrassment, the topic under discussion is very interesting to his immediate priorities.]

She has, yes. It's one of the reasons I've been hoping to meet you. [His tone turns serious. Cold.] Whether or not it gets us home, what the Captain is doing here cannot be allowed to continue.

[He steps back towards the chair, lampstand at rest against his shoulder, though he's not enough at ease to sit.] If I can be of service, I'll help in any way I can.

Yeah, that's actually something I was wondering about-

[ She retrieves the notebook that Stede gave her, flips past the encouraging message to a clean page, and takes some quick notes. ]

Like- I was talking to someone who apparently went through something similar to this before, somewhere else. In the last time they went through it, the people who brought them there asked for help, and they went home again when they were done.

[ Darcy does recognize that tone, and she gives him a small nod in confirmation. ]

It might be important anyway.

[ And then she looks over to Dimitri, gesturing with her pen- ] let us know if you need him to back-track and explain anything, ehn? My explanation was kind of shit.
prince_of_beasts: (think)

[personal profile] prince_of_beasts 2022-07-15 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
[The soul, eh? If that's what the Captain's after, Dimitri can only hope his will make the demon choke.

He nods back to Darcy.
] I'll stop you if I have any questions. At the moment, I know little enough that I couldn't begin to ask. I don't know what I don't know, so to speak. Your explanation was fine -- this situation isn't easily summarized.

[Dimitri can't help but feel he's the worst person he knows to have ended up here. This is magic, the stuff of myth. While he's as versed in folklore as any other Faerghan child, he's no scholar or sorcerer, and who's to say if the Captain shares the same fairy-tale logic? If that's the sort of story this is at all? Annette or Mercedes would be better suited here; Sylvain, or Claude, or von Vestra. Dimitri's purview is the material, in enemies that can be fought, in matters of politics, history, economy. There are no records here, no history to speak of, no resources in surplus or shortage to explain the Captain's actions. Perhaps that's why Dimitri's here, instead of someone better suited to the challenges at hand.

But thinking like that isn't helpful. Unconsciously, he begins to echo Skulduggery's fidgeting, one hand fluttering against his side. The idea of rewarding the Captain for kidnapping and psychological torture grates on him, especially if toying with them all is a means to his ends rather than simple sadism; on the other hand, it also benefits them to know their enemy.
]

I can't imagine how our resistance would help him to that end, either. He must have some other goal, one he hasn't revealed to us. We can hardly trust the word of an enemy. In which case ... I can think of some possibilities, but I'll hold back until I know more about the situation. [He huffs.] There's no point going off half-cocked with some theory you've already tested.

...dude- [ she says excitedly, writing down the exact wording of it. ]

That makes total fucking sense. Like- obviously, if he asked for our help, if we knew what and who he was too, we could use it against him, ehn?

[ It's... uncomfortably reminiscent of her indiscretion with Skulduggery recently, the prying and his reason for keeping secrets from her. ]

I guess if he becomes a god, it's two birds with one stone, ehn? Knows what he is, and nobody can control a god.

[personal profile] prince_of_beasts 2022-07-15 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
Time ... skip? Is that one of the Captain's tricks? And who is Jenny? [Dimitri's not going to ask about the new skull. He can only take in so much new information at once.]

Becoming a god? He seems powerful enough already ... Though that would suggest he's vulnerable now, in ways he's looking to shed. Whatever that may be. But if we can use that against him ...

[Something else about the statement perturbs Dimitri. It's not a good thought, but nothing about this is good, and if Darcy or Skulduggery can tell him he's wrong, that'll only be a relief.] 'Again' ... Could it be that he's already under orders? Controlled by some higher authority, or just under a geas of some sort?

[ Darcy makes a few more notes while Skulduggery is explaining terminology, just so she has the reference for later, even if she already knows. Then she leans forward to listen intently at the new-ish information, tapping the end of her pen restlessly on the book. ]

He could've been deliberately fucking with you about it, making you doubt yourself. But it does make sense. Like... like any of us are doing, with bouncing ourselves off other people to learn from them. 'Don't embarrass yourselves' he said. I think. Something like that. Like- he's been talking about research, maybe he was trying to find something that worked against him, ehn? Something that like- if my usual attack I use on ghosts had worked on him, he'd know he was something like a ghost. Kind of like a fucked up game of guess who.

[ Darcy chewed the inside of her cheek, trying to will herself to think of what it might mean. But there's a connection she doesn't feel like she's getting- ]

Okay but- if he's been doing this for fucking ever, how has he not worked it out yet? Like- obviously he sucks at this. But, I don't know- it's just... unlikely that nothing has ever worked against him. He's got to have something by now. But you make it sound like he doesn't even have any ideas.

[ She's a little bit gratified to hear Skulduggery support her observations, adding a couple of points of his own theorizing and observation to boot. ]

Also, if he is trying to play you for a fool, he's doing a bad job at it, ehn? If it were me I'd be like, sending you on a wild goose chase or something. But it doesn't seem like he's really given you much information at all.

[ She snorts at the idea of including it on the brochure, gesturing with both hands as if she were plastering her words on a billboard, ] 'Welcome to the Serena Eternia; you're not in Hell, but you may as well be.'
prince_of_beasts: (think)

[personal profile] prince_of_beasts 2022-07-17 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
[Dimitri snorts at the suggestion.] I don't know where Sisyphean is, but 'hell' certainly sums up our situation. Can it be too grim when it's more or less the truth? [('Sisyphean' sounds close enough to 'Tailtean', the plains near his home, that he assumes it's a location. Well, he's got the sentiment, at any rate.)

He frowns, going back over something Skulduggery had said.
] You say the Captain seemed unaware of what he'd given away. Could that have been the first instance of this truth -- or untruth -- spell we all seem to be under? I'd assumed it was his doing, but perhaps it comes from whatever controls him ... although if it helps him escape that power, it would seem to be counterproductive.

Then again, if he's destroyed his own memory ... [Dimitri shakes his head. He's getting lost in the weeds, wandering off towards useless speculation -- but he's always been prone to perseverate, and there's so little to go on, none of it conclusive. He still only has fragments of a puzzle Darcy and Skulduggery have yet to put together themselves. He's fairly confident of one thing, though ... With a nod to Darcy, he says, ] I haven't met the Captain myself, but from what you've said, I believe there's some truth to what he's said. If torturing us all is a means to his ends, rather than an end in and of itself, I can't see how it serves him to lie. If he's withholding information on purpose, perhaps ... if he's drawn no conclusion from what he's learned so far, perhaps he hopes that forcing us all to start from scratch will reveal something he's failed to see.
saltwaterlungs: (Coral Sea)

[ Because Skulduggery hadn't explained- ] No- Sisyphus isn't a place, it's like- this myth about a guy who tries to cheat death and ends up having to roll a boulder up a hill each day as a punishment. It's like, a task that's pointless and endless, because the boulder just rolled down the hill again when he was done.

[ Darcy gestures to Dimitri with her pen, ] He's not from Earth. Or like- our worlds aren't similar in the same way yours and mine are. His is... medieval-y, but magic is a thing and everyone can do it. A little bit, anyway.

[ Only Darcy was actually Catholic anyway. Dimitri was Dragon-Catholic. It's different. ]

So... I think the plan does have to come back to helping him. I don't think we can work what he is without his help- he has to have worked some things out if he needed to keep wiping his memories, ehn? All we need to do is like... figure out how to get those memories back. And maybe see if we can get some sort of collateral to stop him just wiping his memories, or killing all of us once he has it worked out.

[personal profile] prince_of_beasts 2022-07-20 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Ah -- I see. Thank you for explaining. [Dimitri coughs, embarrassed. He couldn't have known, but he still feels foolish.

Skulduggery's right. They have to assume they all least know all of the actors on this stage. There's no real evidence of any higher power at play, and the idea raises more questions than it answers. Still, Dimitri's all too familiar with the feeling of conductors behind the scenes, of being caught in someone else's malevolent script, and he can't release that paranoia so easily.
]

You're right -- we gain as much from knowing what he is, and what might hurt him, as he does. So for the moment our goals seem to be aligned. [Dimitri grimaces. That still feels bad.] But what sort of collateral would work against a creature like him?

And ... what would he gain from wiping his memories so often? Could it be there's something he doesn't want to remember? [If Dimitri could wipe his own memory ... there's nothing he could conscience erasing, but he would be so, so tempted.]

Want to go ask him? Hit him with the good cop bad c- [ A yawn she's unable to stifle, that she nonetheless attempts to with the back of her hand. 4 am sure is catching up with her. ] bad cop routine, see if we can get something on him?

[ Sometimes theorizing just walked you in circles, and you needed to start getting hard evidence in the field. The latter being when she was usually called in on her ghost hunts. ]

At the very least, if we can squeeze something out of it, he can't wipe our memories, ehn?

[Dimitri preens a little. He is not immune to validation, and while Skulduggery isn't exactly an authority figure, he's the adult in the room, and definitely the person here who knows the most about what's going on.]

I'm not the one to ask when it comes to magic. It's commonplace in my world, but ... [He grimaces.] I'm quite useless at it. Disastrously so. But if the Captain's been as forthcoming as you say, it might not hurt to confront him. [ ... he says, only for Darcy's addition to catch him off-guard.] Could he wipe our memories?

[He doesn't get to follow that thought very far. He catches Darcy's yawn, burying it behind his wrist. He's leaning more heavily on his lampstand than he was; without it, he'd probably be wobbling.]
