An easy guess: it was the backstory of most of those guys, in Ed's experience, and unfortunately, as it turns out, not one that changes for a few hundred years.
Dream it may be for Watson, it's something of a masochistic nightmare to Ed. Then again, the alternative is just hating the guy, and that's unfortunately easier said than done, especially when he's one of the more pleasant fans Ed's had the chance to interact with. But still, the more he sits here the more he thinks No wonder Stede likes this guy; they're from the same stock.
"The Golden Days, huh?" Ed's smile is a touch ironic. One hundred years on and they're still romanticizing piracy--probably more so once pirates are only things of myths and legends and no longer boogey-men raiding ports and pillaging the coast. "Lots of gold, not sure I'd call it golden. Don't get me wrong, we have a lot of fun--especially me and Stede--but pirating is a live-fast/die-young profession." He pokes the end of an umbrella through the rind of an orange. "And those books? Always get me wrong; nine pistols? What is that about."
