Country roads, take me home

Who: Steven Grant and open - start your own subthreads and stuff
What: Studio Ghibli movie night
Where: Cabin 135
When: early December
Warnings: none so far

After subjecting Marc and Maeve to Ghibli nights, Steven has widened his circle of suffering to include a few other people. What was going to be 'come over and watch My Neighbour Totoro?' became a proper whole evening at Steven and Marc's cabin. They spent the afternoon tidying up the room, returning a bunch of library books and keeping the rest of his stash in a corner on the other side of the bed. Clean laundry put away, a small load of dirty clothes taken down to the wash. The ankle cuff and bungee cord is stashed away in the cupboard alongside their small emergency hoard of water, snacks and food in case they have to lock themselves in their cabin one day for weeks on end. Bathroom tidied up as well, with extra toilet paper stacked on top of the cistern in anticipation of several guests.

The cabin is still small in spite of their cleanup efforts, and Steven insists on having some snacks available, so for savoury options there's baby carrots and celery sticks with hummus dip, potato skins, kumara fries and cassava chips, and mango sticky rice and pan fried cinnamon bananas for something sweet. It's not exactly going to be the healthiest night in terms of food, but half a dozen people sitting knee to knee in a claustrophobic little cabin crying at children's anime is surely going to make up for that and be healthy for all of them.

The programme for the night is Steven's Studio Ghibli box set, although he only has one DVD player and one television so they need to pick their movies wisely since they'll only be able to watch two or three. They're always welcome to come back next time to watch more. Steven's recommending more Kiki's Delivery Service and Princess Mononoke, and less Grave of the Fireflies and When Marnie Was There. They don't really want to be crying into their bowl of vegan snacks every 15 minutes...

Sharky groans from somewhere nearby. "Oh my God, dude, they didn't even call it that when I was a kid." Hahaha, get it? Because he's from the future and so he's old????

...

"...For real though, is the rice good?"

"Dude, what's wrong with Japanimation?" Are you calling him uncool and out of touch?? (Even in his own time, it's uncool and out of touch to say it, but shhh, he doesn't know that. He's not in the know.) "Wait, when were you a kid, man?" Because Jeff could try to do the math based on what he knows about Sharky, but... ugh. Don't make him do math,

"And yeah-- here! Try it!" Jeff's just gonna pass his plate and spoon over to Sharky. What's some shared utensils between pals?

"Uhhh, the 80s? Full disclosure, I def didn't know anime was even a thing until Samurai Pizza Cats in... '91? '93? Whatever." Formative influences, man.

This is a beautiful, infection-free world, so we're just gonna share all day and all night! He's willing to try anything once, and that includes dessert rice.

"Oh, shit, that is pretty good. I guess I should've expected it, 'cos rice puddin' and all..."

So... Sharky was a kid when Jeff was a kid. Well, when Jeff was, like, an older kid-slash-teenager. Holy shit, he really is older than Sharky. That's so weird, and he's way too sober to process that right now, so he just... won't!

"Samurai Pizza Cats... Is that like a sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?" WAIT. "Is that an anime?"

IF IT IS, THEN JEFF HAS WATCHED ONE WHOLE ANIME.

Oh wait, yeah, back to the rice.

"Dude, right? I totally forgot rice pudding was a thing, so I was like, whoa, hey, Steven invented a new use for rice!"

Wait... is TMNT anime? He doesn't know off the top of his head and there's no more Wikipedia to check...

"Mmmmaybe? Might need to fact-check that with a bigger nerd than me, like Steven or Pratt." Not a hint of shade, he is admitting to his own shortcomings here! "All I know is like, Samurai Pizza Cats was the shit. Nothin' like the original, I guess, 'cuz they didn't have a translation? So it was just a bunch of VAs doin' some wacky cartoon shit."

He almost goes for another bite when he realizes yo, he can just get his own... "Okay, I need Pratt to try this shit if he hasn't already. He's uber-vegetarian so I bet he'd dig it."

"So they were just winging it? Dude..." He takes a moment to consider that, then comes to the awed conclusion of, "That's fucking punk as shit."

That's what Samurai Pizza Cats is. Punk rock anime.

"He is? Oh man, that's cool, me too!" Note to self: hit up Pratt for vegetarian tips. Jeff's really trying to expand his palate here. "I wish I could go all out like Steven, man, that guy's like, a vegetarian guru..."

"Right! Fuckin' sick shit, man. Gotta have a lot of balls to improv anime comedy and shit."

Man, there are a lot of vegetarians on the ship! That's actually really good; he can hook Pratt up with some dudes to eat around who won't accidentally make him think about eating human body parts!

"Y'all should have, like, vegetarian night or somethin'. Especially since we don't got TikTok or anythin' to like, watch for inspo."
