Country roads, take me home
Who: Steven Grant and open - start your own subthreads and stuff
What: Studio Ghibli movie night
Where: Cabin 135
When: early December
Warnings: none so far
After subjecting Marc and Maeve to Ghibli nights, Steven has widened his circle of suffering to include a few other people. What was going to be 'come over and watch My Neighbour Totoro?' became a proper whole evening at Steven and Marc's cabin. They spent the afternoon tidying up the room, returning a bunch of library books and keeping the rest of his stash in a corner on the other side of the bed. Clean laundry put away, a small load of dirty clothes taken down to the wash. The ankle cuff and bungee cord is stashed away in the cupboard alongside their small emergency hoard of water, snacks and food in case they have to lock themselves in their cabin one day for weeks on end. Bathroom tidied up as well, with extra toilet paper stacked on top of the cistern in anticipation of several guests.
The cabin is still small in spite of their cleanup efforts, and Steven insists on having some snacks available, so for savoury options there's baby carrots and celery sticks with hummus dip, potato skins, kumara fries and cassava chips, and mango sticky rice and pan fried cinnamon bananas for something sweet. It's not exactly going to be the healthiest night in terms of food, but half a dozen people sitting knee to knee in a claustrophobic little cabin crying at children's anime is surely going to make up for that and be healthy for all of them.
The programme for the night is Steven's Studio Ghibli box set, although he only has one DVD player and one television so they need to pick their movies wisely since they'll only be able to watch two or three. They're always welcome to come back next time to watch more. Steven's recommending more Kiki's Delivery Service and Princess Mononoke, and less Grave of the Fireflies and When Marnie Was There. They don't really want to be crying into their bowl of vegan snacks every 15 minutes...

The impossible dream, his shining beacon. To think even Japan could reach it someday. A mystery.

“Duscur... I may never see it heal like this.”

Tw: Genocide description
“No,” he grimaces, “It was not a volcano, nor cultists. The king of Faerghus was murdered on our soil, and my entire people were held responsible. The Faerghan army came and they slaughtered every man, woman, and child that they could find. Burned villages, stole livestock, salted crops. There were refugees, yes, but we are all marked as traitors. Many live in tents in poverty. I was one of the lucky ones.”

"I hate Kings." Despite the Demon King title. "I'm sorry, Dedue." He needs to stay calm, he doesn't want to hurt his god. "Sounds like Faerghus was looking for an excuse. I don't know that it will never heal," grrrrr. He feels all feral, the ancient desire to behead gods and kings for doing this. To fight the daimyo and everyone that stood in his way resurfaces. "Ieyasu learned all of it so I could leave it him. I wish he could--" Nobunaga rubs the side of his head. Plants?
"Bandits do that kind of shit in my world. Well, not salting crops. In hell, there's too little to waste just to try to starve your enemy, you just have to steal it from them."
These two barely need Grave of the Fireflies over here jeez.
"Endless revenge, isn't it?" A hand goes over his eyes in thought. "All it takes is one leader. Someone strong enough to say enough. To rally people together, to say: no more. To say 'these are my people and I won't let you hurt them.' And then the pain and bitterness can be washed away, but it takes time. Humans are incredible, you know? Don't give up hope. Maybe a leader will come and save them. Then the healing can begin. But first the fires have to stop."
Gettin real Totoro / Grave of the Fireflies double feature Japanese theatrical release in here
Sorries don't feel like anywhere near enough from anyone.
"Because I have lived in Faerghus, I am used to people knowing this about the people of Duscur when they see me. Many regard me with suspicion, and I cannot blame them because they do not know better. It is strange to live somewhere where that is not the case."
Even now, he notices that he is carefully constructing his response to be as non-confrontational towards Faerghans as possible. Dedue knows, somewhere deep inside of him, there is an immense disgust towards the code of Faerghan chivalry that would justify such cruel brutality while praising Faerghus as civilized, honorable, just. To him, there is nothing beautiful about a land that only loves war. But he has lived a life where any hint of lack of sympathy for Faerghan grief over the king's death would in itself be a sign of justifying treason. And old habits die hard.
Nobunaga's reassurances do not comfort him. Maybe there would have been a time when such words might have helped. As Dimitri's vassal, he channeled everything he did into the hopes that, once Dimitri took the throne, the violence would end and Duscur could rebuild. But here, he will never see that happen. And back in his timeline, Dimitri is no longer a crown prince but a fugitive. It all feels very hopeless.
He thinks about the idea that one person could instantly change everything. He once believed it, but now it feels too nice, too storybook. And far too much pressure to put on one person alone. He's seen firsthand how that sort of pressure can tear someone apart from the inside.
And he thinks of the rioters from Duscur that the Blue Lions once helped to flee. Did their fight mean nothing, because no leader will come to save them? Or will they choose their battles and fight another day? Does the world change because of the strong leaders that make big decisions? Or because of the smaller people that keep on persisting?
"Perhaps. I do think it takes time. I have not fully given up hope. But hope is difficult."
cw: kidnapping, war, assassinations, etc.
"Some scars last more than a generation though." Nobunaga looks up at the ceiling.
"I've never known peace. There is not a single part of Japan that wasn't at war. And yet, look at it now. But this is different perhaps, since we had no neighbors. Just the fighting among ourselves over lands that couldn't grow. Still..."

Dedue‘s attention focuses on the movie again. The girls and the spirits are praying for the crops to grow. The plants, full of magic, burst from the ground and keep rising up and up to the sky.
“There was a meadow I used to love. My sister and I would go there, and I would braid flowers in her hair. That is where the king’s carriage fell. The ground was marred by dark magic during the attack. A scar in what had once been a place of peace. I do not know that this part of the meadow will ever regrow. But if I could go there, I would work with the land so it could be something beautiful again.”

Screw it, Nobunaga just starts crying. He folds his arms over his legs, hides his face in it, but yeah, he's just bawling, very very very quietly. He's going to need a moment to speak.
"I hope you do..." near whisper, but still sobbing.
"What was her name?" Was oops. Should he modify that? He can barely speak though.
Klaus was right, Nobunaga is incapable of small emotions.

She would’ve liked this movie, he thinks.
