BATTLE ROYALE EVENT: SHIP
[fortunately, not signing up for the shore excursion doesn't mean the passengers still on board don't get to have a little fun. on the contrary: they'll get to have some of the most fun of all!
about an hour after the tender leaves, at about 9AM, every screen on the ship, from the cabin TVs to the one above the pool, begins playing a live feed of the events on the island, starting with Friday's introduction video and transitioning to the passengers leaving the bunker. from then on, the camera (?) seems to always know where the action is, bringing close-up views of each fight, each death. when little action occurs, highlight reels play. there is no audio, however, outside of the droning, inane muzak of the stream and the kitschy sound effects of the reels; time to brush up on your lip-reading if you want the hot goss on scene!
in the atrium, near Friday's desk, is a large piece of construction paper, titled "PLACE YOUR BETS," showing a table with the names (some true, some not) of each competitor, with a space to write down your name next to who you think will win. the captain has already made his choice! what are you betting? don't worry about it.
the screens will play the game 24 hours a day. destroying the screens wholly will buy you only momentary respite. so, sit back, and enjoy.]

[The third day simply sees Rita promptly destroying the screen in her cabin once again and hunkering down inside the room. She has a bottle of water or two. Maybe there are some snacks from the shops she'd picked up at some point, but regardless, Rita's in no mood to eat. She's used to going a while between meals, anyway. It's fine--she'll just stay in here with books that she isn't really focusing on.
She refuses to go outside and watch the feed. She'll answer the door if someone knocks insistently, though.]

...Miss Goggles?

She's shuffling over to open the door before she quite realizes it, feeling tired and dazed.]
...Hey, Fio.
[Rita's voice is unusually quiet and she doesn't muster a smile, but she opens the door wide enough so Fio can come in if she wants to.]
no subject
...Hello.
[ Shyly stepping inside, a scrap of paper can be seen in Fio's hand, turned over on the blank side. She doesn't put on a smile either, but opens her arms to give the older girl a hug. ]
no subject
Uh...you want...
[...Okay, just this once. And only because it's Fio. Rita is going to have some of her usual fluster at a moment like this, cheeks red as she steps close and awkwardly puts her arms around the kid. It'll make Fio feel better, right?
(Not gonna think about how it makes Rita herself feel better, as unfamiliar a gesture as it is.)]
So, um...you haven't been watching what happened, right?
[...This is fine, the door's closed. They can talk while having a little hug and it's nobody else's business!]

Her little arms give the older girl a light squeeze. For a moment, she doesn't speak, uncertain how to answer the question. She doesn't want to worry Rita. But she can't easily bring herself to lie either. The screens were far too difficult to avoid entirely when sometimes it was necessary to make rounds on the ship to fetch what you need. ]
I saw... just a little... I didn't want to watch...
[ And she notices something else as she's wrapped in the hug. ]
...Your hand?
no subject
[She hugs Fio just a little tighter in return. Nobody should have had to see any of that, but especially not this kid. That stupid captain made it so hard to avoid seeing the broadcast, just to torment them all even more...]
Oh...yeah.
[She absently smoothes Fio's hair a little with her right hand before starting to pull back.]
It's back, just the way it was before.
no subject
...huh.
[ She peers up at her hand curiously. ]
But how?
no subject
[There's no easy way to put that, but she isn't going to try covering it up. If Fio saw even some of the broadcast...she'd know they were dying on the island.]
But for the actual mechanism behind it--I don't know. It must be some kind of weird magic, or--I don't even know. Magic in our world can't do this.
no subject
[ Is all Fio can say about it. Further discussing magic is clearly not her strength. And it shifts back to focusing on the death, which she doesn't want to talk too much about. It doesn't seem like they can further explain it anyway. She falls awkwardly silent, unable to say much else.
And then she remembers that the paper she brought along is still in her hand. She wrinkles the edges a little more as she brings it close to her chest, keeping the blank side faced towards Rita. ]
Um... I have something for you...
no subject
Huh? For me?
[Rita blinks curiously, glancing down at the paper. She has no idea what could be on the other side.]
What is it?
no subject
It's a colorful drawing of Rita... and a fireball? Though it's obviously not made by professional hands, it does look like something Fio poured her heart into, making sure each shape was filled with color. While making the drawing, she thought of their first meeting and how delighted by the little magic she showed her... it was a pleasant day. ]
...It's you. And your... [ She doesn't stumble saying it this time: ] el.. elemental magic.
THAT IS SO CUTE I CAN'T HANDLE IT ♥
[For a long moment, Rita's too stunned to say anything else. Nobody's ever drawn a picture of her before or given her something quite like this, but...despite everything, she feels a flicker of warmth in her chest. Fio was...really easily impressed by her magic when they met, huh?]
Wow... That's--it's pretty amazing, Fio.
:') ♥
Thank you. I'm... glad you like it. [ A pause. ] Um... I'd like to see more of your magic someday!
[ Or... anything really. The magic isn't necessary. She's just at a loss of words on what else to tell her. Fio just wants the people she likes to feel better. ]
no subject
[Rita gives her a small smile, even as she hates how someone as sweet as this has to deal with everything awful that's been happening... The mention of magic gives her an idea, though.]
Hmm...what sort of magic would you like to see? I can develop new spells, too, though it can take a little time.
no subject
The amount of time it will take to develop it won't matter, since Fio will very patiently wait. But it's kind of difficult for her to come up with an answer, when Fio knows very little about the usage of elemental magic or any type of magic. (Though some form of it might exist in her world...) She does know about some of the elements like fire, water, wind, earth. ]
...I don't know. Maybe something like... a big magic flower? That might be real pretty.
no subject
[Rita nods confidently. She hasn't really developed any new spells in a while, even though it's such a fascinating process. And it could cheer up Fio, just like she's done for Rita--even if it's going to be harder to focus than she'd like to admit right now, she'll still get it done.]
I'll show you when it's ready, okay?
no subject
Okay. Take all the time you need.
