[open] not that kind of crab
Who: Honoria Crabb, Murderbot, Ginko and You?
When: Early June
Where: Various locations
Summary: Settling, exercise routines, distrust of the excursion, finally talking to some folks
Warnings: Nothing major right now, will be some talk of the murder game tho
1. infinite tommy bahamas? infinite tommy bahamas
She's been here long enough now that Johnny's won: she does, in fact, have to admit that she needs some new clothes. Washing and reusing what she's already comfortable with is not going to cut it forever. So, here she is. In the seemingly infinite Tommy Bahamas. Looking rather boggled by some of the styles available. Is it the patterns? The cuts? Yes. Just— yes.
She has found some button-ups that aren't too offensive to her, but finding some good trousers seems to be another story. The women's pants are all either too loose or too tight for her liking and she doesn't seem to have cottoned on that she can just wander over to the men's section yet.
2. hitting the gym
Crabb's used to living a very active life. Running around the city chasing after cases, trying to stop bad people doing bad things, getting into fist fights on the regular... sitting around so much here on the ship is enough to make a woman restless, so she tries not to do that so much. So, she can often be found either in Calgona's or on the sports deck.
A punching bag isn't the same as fighting against another person, but it's something, and all things considered it's pretty satisfying to get to hit something as hard as she wants. The running track's more artificial than running around the city, but it's good enough and keeps the blood flowing, gives her time to let thoughts churn under the surface. No matter what she's doing, she occasionally has to take breaks—chug some water, wipe the sweat off her face, catch her breath—when it's easier to grab her attention.
Occasionally, you might even find her in the shallow end of the pool in a Tommy Bahama swimsuit and some trunks, not exactly swimming but getting more acclimatised to the water with the basics Undine was teaching. Crabb's always been the type to keep at something, after all.
3. don't trust like that
There's a war going on in Crabb's head, from the second the 'new' sign-up sheet goes up. On one hand, it feels wrong to stay behind, to not go and see what the hell the catch is this time, on the other... well, last time she let that instinct drive her, she spent two days injured, scared and in hiding, and died.
Apparently that's what it takes to finally give Honoria Crabb at least some pause. So, rather than signing herself up, right now, she's watching people come and go from a spot in the lounge, sat backwards over a chair, a suspicious crease in her brow.
4. confrontation or conversation, hard to say [closed to Murderbot]
So, Crabb's talked to Ava. Not on her own initiative, exactly, considering Ava tried to drop a giant Pez through her door and essentially confused Crabb into finally saying something, but apparently, it's finally knocked her out of idle. Because she's come to find Rin, and without waiting for it to acknowledge her, she opens with:
"Alright, elephant in the room, let's get this over with, yeah?"
5. roommate time [closed to Ginko]
That she'd finally been assigned a roommate hasn't totally avoided Crabb's notice. Somehow, she just hasn't caught whoever it is, yet, between her own daily routine and whatever this stranger is up to. So it actually catches her by surprise when she finally does see the guy, when she comes back to grab something one day.
"So—you're the new roommate, huh?"

Roommates!
He's back here actually trying to draw his own map of the ship with what he's seen so far. It's private (mostly) and it has great light, so it was the natural choice.
Looking up from his self-appointed task, he raises his visible eyebrow. "Yep, that's me." He stands up to give her a little bow, feeling that this situation requires at least a bit of politeness. "Ginko. I'm... something of a wanderer, where I'm from."
no subject
"Honoria Crabb. You can just call me Crabb." Only a few people use her first name regularly and two of them are her literal parents, so. "Wandering for wandering's sake, or that necessary for what you do? I'm a detective, keeps me out and about but within city walls."
She's not used to spending more time in her own home than it takes to eat, sleep, handle hygiene and get new case details. That changed a bit when they started working out of the Margrave, but not by much. Some habits just stick.
She's also a detective because she's the curious type, rather than, say, the other way around. So, questions are a given. As is a quick once-over to get a first impression of the guy.
Whoops sorry about the lateness
She's the first one he's met on this ship to probe deeper, and it's not like he's opposed to explaining, it's just... difficult, here.
"I'm... what's known as a mushishi. And I help people, where I can." He rubs the back of his neck, feeling a little awkward. "But I can't stay in one place for long."
no worries!
"Causes problems if you stick some place too long?" She steps properly into the room to sit herself down, picking up a notebook off the table that's technically what she came back for, but since Ginko's here she figures she may as well talk to the guy. She does cast a quick look at the map he's drawing.
"That's not a title I've ever heard before but I'm guessing that's not much of a surprise, yeah? Most folks' worlds that should be like mine don't have the country I'm from, it's bleedin' weird." So she's already pretty used to how something existing in one world doesn't mean anything about anywhere else.
no subject
It's harder to force out than it has any right to be, the familiar word feeling strange and foreign against his tongue. More weirdness about this place, no doubt.
"Where I'm from, they're everywhere, and they often cause problems. I'm one of the few who can see them, and people like me are in the business of going around and helping those troubled by the creatures. But if I hang around anywhere too long, I attract them and cause more trouble."
no subject
"Weird how this place translates," Crabb comments first, after the correction. "Seemed weird from day one how everyone from all these worlds was speaking the same language. Convenient, I guess, but..."
Anyway. She takes all that in and it's, well, from her perspective pretty much everyone's worlds are nuts compared to hers, but she's getting used to that.
"Huh. Bit of a double-edged sword, then. Being able to help out but having the risk of attracting the problem in the first place."
no subject
He shrugs, adjusting the map. Crabb can see it's clearly the start of an attempt to map the ship they're on, if only by the places he's labeled stuff like 'shops' and 'food'. "It's not that immediate, I can usually linger in places for a week or two--longer, in winter. Long enough to help, and usually long enough to fix whatever's wrong." He draws another line, frowns at it, then erases it and draws it again in a slightly different place. "Only the unethical ones pull that kind of crap."
no subject
"Not one of the folks anything's changed for, so I can only imagine, but that does sound bleedin' strange to deal with."
Huh. The map's not a bad idea, really. Especially with things seemingly changing sometimes, going by the new store. Might help keep track, some. She keeps watching curiously.
"There's always some, ain't there. Unethical types, I mean." She shakes her head. "I used to work for the state, went independent when I realised just how scummy most of the folks in charge were. Doing everything for their own sake and not the people's."
no subject
"Mmm, it does seem that way. Anyway, the mushishi are largely wanderers without a lot of oversight, so... but there are some decent ones in the bunch. It's not a profession people tend to do unless they have little choice."
no subject
Always got to start somewhere. It's more than Crabb's thought to do up until now, she's done a lot less in general than she'd like about figuring out a single damn thing about this place, but that happens when you die for the first time only a couple weeks in. Kinda knocks you about a bit.
"Right. Is that 'cause... well, putting it plain, you end up in the profession 'cause you see and attract these... mushi," wow, that is an effort to say, weird, "so it's kinda a case of what else are you gonna do?"
no subject
Well, it's a little more complicated than simply 'found' but he's not going to talk about that with someone he just met, so. Close enough.
"But yeah that's how most of us end up in the business, so to speak. I'm sure there are plenty who might not need to do it for the same reasons I do, but... well. Villagers tend to be pretty superstitious about these things, and people who claim to see the invisible or seemingly attract trouble tend to get actively kicked out of their villages."
no subject
"Sure do. Probably would've been stuck in my old position for that reason if things had been different." You know, like if she didn't have a couple rich friends and a new job to fall back on.
She definitely isn't expecting the guy's entire life story off the bat, for what it's worth; she's just intensely curious and the fact people here come from entirely different worlds really brings that forward.
She flinches a little sympathetically at the last part. "Eesh, guess that would happen. Superstition's not always the most forgiving thing."
