JUNE EVENT: CAMP

early on June 10th, Friday's morning announcements end with a request for everyone going on the latest excursion to meet her in the atrium. she seems in noticeably better spirits than she had been last time, and she leads them cheerfully to the tender. once they are all aboard, and the door is securely shut, the interior fills with gas, and, perhaps, their last thought before they slip into unconsciousness is "oh shit, not again."

passengers wake up on a rickety old school bus, driving down a dirt road surrounded by woods. what is it that they notice first? that, no matter what they were wearing before, they are now wearing a camp t-shirt and legitimately horrifyingly short shorts? the overstuffed backpack between their knees? the words "take one down and pass it around" dying on their lips? the fact that Friday is absolutely driving the bus?

or, maybe the fact that it's already slowing down, pulling up in front of a massive wooden sign, saying:

CAMP AION

when they get out of the bus, Friday is the one to divide them up into their cabin groups, and she is the one to give the counselors their very official-looking clipboards and whistles. she explains that they are in charge, and that she will be back to pick them up in a week, and... very little else. she responds to nothing outside of whatever is on her unseen little script, and she gets back on the bus shortly after, leaving them there.

welcome to camp. let's make some summer memories!

"I think so. I've never seen one for real. Only in books, really. I got one of those weird gifts at Sundries with a storybook about a rabbit."

The book gave it some really big feelings, too.

Watson suggested he try reading. Maybe he ought to, if Rin was reading. And there were books about rabbits and carrots. "I've never seen one, either. That I can remember."

He starts collecting supplies, but slowly. Scissors. There's a needle and thread around here, surely. "I haven't seen your book. Is it good?"

"I'm pretty sure it's for children. It's called The Velveteen Rabbit. When we're back on the ship, I can lend it to you, if you want."

Please don't tease it for reading kids' books. It was comforting--in a complicated, indescribable way.

Murderbot. Have you ever known Sarge to tease you about anything? C'mon.

Honestly, he's not even entirely sure how to tease, yet.

He nods, though. "Watson suggested I read. When I don't know what else to do. If you liked it. I might, too."

"When we're back on the ship, I'll lend it to you. And...maybe recommend some of the other books I've looked at?"

Its lips quirk slightly, the ghost of a smile.

Sarge nods a couple times, then gets back to his digging through the supplies looking for a proper sewing kid. "That sounds great. Thanks, Rin." He wrinkles his nose. "I go in the library. And get kinda overwhelmed with how much is in there. How do you even pick anything." This is why he never goes into the buffet. In the Drunken Sailor the ghost just bring him something, and he eats it.

"Picking something at random. And remembering I have plenty of time to get through it all. We both do. It's been nearly three thousand hours here, you know. It could be much, much longer."

Sarge has a hard time picturing an infinite future. He also has a hard time with even inconsequential choice. (Maybe, actually, especially inconsequential choice.)

He pauses in his digging around in the shelves and boxes, and rests his forehead on the shelving wearily. "I know. It probably will be. That just makes trying to fill the time even harder."
