JUNE EVENT: CAMP

early on June 10th, Friday's morning announcements end with a request for everyone going on the latest excursion to meet her in the atrium. she seems in noticeably better spirits than she had been last time, and she leads them cheerfully to the tender. once they are all aboard, and the door is securely shut, the interior fills with gas, and, perhaps, their last thought before they slip into unconsciousness is "oh shit, not again."

passengers wake up on a rickety old school bus, driving down a dirt road surrounded by woods. what is it that they notice first? that, no matter what they were wearing before, they are now wearing a camp t-shirt and legitimately horrifyingly short shorts? the overstuffed backpack between their knees? the words "take one down and pass it around" dying on their lips? the fact that Friday is absolutely driving the bus?

or, maybe the fact that it's already slowing down, pulling up in front of a massive wooden sign, saying:

CAMP AION

when they get out of the bus, Friday is the one to divide them up into their cabin groups, and she is the one to give the counselors their very official-looking clipboards and whistles. she explains that they are in charge, and that she will be back to pick them up in a week, and... very little else. she responds to nothing outside of whatever is on her unseen little script, and she gets back on the bus shortly after, leaving them there.

welcome to camp. let's make some summer memories!

Maeve looks over at him with a touch of fondness. "We all have our chaos." She doesn't have the experience with raiding ships. She assumes it was at least less chaotic than it sounds like it should be. "I just realized quite how bad things were talking to someone else and now it feels a little...like something I should wait a few conversations to reveal."

She shrugs. "What do you like to read?" It seems like a better conversation anyway.

"Oh all sorts." Books is a topic he can warm to. "Action. Adventure on the high seas. The occasional romance. I read the Count of Monte Cristo so many times and Don Quixote and several versions of the Odyssey and the Iliad... I also like Jurassic Park. There are these creatures called dinosaurs- thunder lizards- which don't actually breathe thunder- but cause havoc and eat people. It's a good read."

He's a bit fond of that book, actually, even if he doesn't understand most of it. "Yourself?"

Maeve recognizes a few titles, likely because of the time she was from. There's a hint of confusion about Jurassic Park and thunder lizards. She's seen quite a few lizards, but none that she would call thunder lizards. Or any that would likely eat people. Certainly cause havoc if found in the wrong place. "I will take your word for it."

She hasn't considered she might be asked to reciprocate books she likes. She's quiet for a moment. "I never spent much time reading back home. But I've been trying to read some things here. So I don't know that I'm even entirely certain."

"Well what sorts of things are you drawn to? Action? Adventure? Mystery? Romance? Unspeakable cosmic horror that shakes the boundaries of your perceived reality?" A pause. "The last is a little close to home, maybe, but it could provide catharsis."

Maeve isn't entirely certain about any of them. "Something for right now, I believe, without too much thought. Certainly not the last. So far. Perceived reality is...well, a bit..." She gestures vaguely. "Well, I'm not certain I'm ready to read that for now. Unless people rise up and destroy those that oppress them." There's an expression that's a little distant in that moment. "But perhaps not yet."
