Waking up in a strange place is a sadly common for Shinichi-it wasn't even the first time he woke up on a strange boat. At least it wasn't a canoe this time. Still, after meeting with the cruise director and the near heart attack from her knowing his real name. He tried to insist there was a mix up but after that mess he decided to distract himself with a little exploring to get a better idea of the layout and where exactly he is.

The first place he's investigating is the main hall. He's got his notebook out and seems to be taking notes and looking far too calm for the age he appears to be.

He looks over as he hears someone approaching and shoves the notebook in his pocket before putting on his best little kid face and rushing up to them.

"Hello! Do you know where we are?" He offers his sweetest little kid face, eyes bright and innocent.

Who the hell wore their hair like that? This kid is either bad at description or Alec missed a fashion trend. Maybe it was cultural.

"Conan..." What a name. Who could seriously decide that for their child? Must be another fashion trend. He notices anyway the kid seems a bit on edge so maybe he's just holding it together.

"I haven't seen anyone like that, no. We could look for them together if you like."

His shoulders sink a little in disappointment, maybe he'd been hoping someone had seen them but he really hadn't expected anything. Ran would have definitely come looking for him by now if she was were here.

"That's okay, Ran-neechan would have come looking for me by now." He says calmly. "How long have you been here?"

Is it okay? He's not sure. He straightens then because he has to or slip a disc and cracks his back.

"Not long. Feels like forever. But I'm sure we'll find our way out soon enough." A compulsory lie. And then because this child, if not actually a gremlin, seems the bright sort. "Have you seen the library?"

Find their way out soon? He frowns gently like he's questioning the man's intelligence. He knows a lie when he hears one. He knows the tactic as he's used it time and time again with the Genta and them but he's far too stubborn to even pretend he believes that.

"I don't think that's true. We're on an ocean in a boat. Even if we find out why we're here relatively quickly it'll probably be awhile before we get off the boat." Unless they're able to contact someone via radio or something but that seems unlikely.

"That's logical." He puts his hands in his pockets, looking around. "But in places like these, logic doesn't apply. A boat at sea doesn't mean much does it-- Ask yourself how we got here to begin with and where here is. It's not as simple as being taken off the street. There's every chance we can find out how to return the same way we arrived."

It's still a lie. It's not that easy. It's never that easy. But it's probable now that he says it out loud.

"We just have to keep our eyes and ears open and not take anything for granted."

You know, he was going to let it slide but then Hardy had to try and double down on it. He lets the innocent look of a seven year old fall right off his face only to be replaced with an extremely unimpressed look.

"I'm not so naïve that I don't recognize when I'm being lied to, you know. And if you can't use logic then what's the point of a detective?"

The vaguely irritated look on his face melts away and he looks like that same innocent kid again. "Mm! I'll keep my eyes ears open for anything interesting!"

"If you're only going to use logic in an illogical world you're not going to make a very good detective." Harsh but true. He is still equivocating between child and gremlin and is wondering if it's a bit of both.

"And if you want to be irritated, be irritated, be bossy and petulant and whatever comes to your head. Nothing bad is going to happen to you if you're not cute." Because that was how complexes developed and he'd rather a raging brat than a kid who didn't think he could be true to himself. Or a gremlin for that matter.

"How can you use anything but logic to solve a case?" Conan asks, annoyance just leaking through his tone.

He drops the cute kid once again, this time not bothering to even try and bring it back up. It's much less that he thinks he has to be cute all the time and more along the lines of being cute is a tactical advantage. People drop their guard around kids and Conan will continue to use it against them any chance he gets.

"I don't that anything bad would happen, however, it'll be much harder to get information from other people if I make them too angry."

"You can always get information from someone, you just have to know what you're looking for. People tend to show their true colors when they're irritated." He kind of likes the kid in spite of himself.

"Logic just can't be the only thing in your arsenal. People are not logical. They don't act logically. They act based on emotion or conviction or sudden decisions and sometimes they're stupid for no reason. Haven't you ever done something just on impulse?" He doesn't condescend to Conan by defining the word.

"And some situations defy logic completely." Like this one.

"No, there's a logic to everything it's just that sometimes we don't know what it is." Although, he has to admit he does tend to act pretty impulsively at times, particularly when he thinks someone's in danger.

"And I did say it would be harder to get information not that it was impossible." There have been a few occasions in which Conan did intentionally make someone mad to force them to reveal their true colors but he prefers a more discrete way of gathering his information. Ask seemingly unrelated questions and lure the criminal into a false sense of security before springing his trap.

"Hm." He doesn't know if he agrees with it or not. Whether he does it does give Conan a sense of control in the world so he'll let him keep it. "That's fair. And it may be easier but it's going to be a difficult charade to keep at with everyone in close quarters." But he won't betray that secret because everyone needed a mask or two.

Conan raises an eyebrow at his words because this man is making the assumption he intends to keep up the innocent kid act which that would be far more effort that he's really wanting to exert and being seven meant he burned through energy twice as fast. People are irritating to him on a good day and if he's stuck here for however long, he's going to get bored eventually.

"I have no intention of keeping it up forever, that would be exhausting."
