MARCH OPEN LOG

[a soft chime of unplaceable music at 7 AM sharp. Friday's voice going over the daily weather (it never changes) and the daily schedule (it barely varies, though Friday does mention a "welcome party" set for later in the month with increasing amounts of poorly restrained glee. the mic is passed so that the captain can make his usual announcement. after a minute, it is passed back, so that Friday can wish everyone a fun and fulfilling day.

it's easy to fall into routine, on the serena eterna.

the spirits, or whatever they are, seem to have calmed down. they are still there, of course, but the plates are carried to tables instead of thrown, and any movement of the furniture is the kind that comes from normal use. wonder what they were so upset about. maybe someone talked to them.

an unfamiliar face in the hall balks at how their legs stop working suddenly. new passengers seem to arrive every other day or so, and it's always the same exact process. did you keep your lei?

the sun is shining. the air is warm. the sea is placid as a lake. you never meant to end up here. you certainly don't want to be here.

but, you can try to make the best of it.]

[ooc note: if any character decides to do some more than casual investigation of a location, be sure to ping the mod! there may be hidden treats! or hidden tricks! or maybe nothing! the best kind of prize is a SUR-PRISE!]

[Imagine his surprise when a kid practically splats next to him while Ebalon is merely standing there gazing out over the sea, wondering where the hell they're even going. He doesn't jolt, but he does manage to look mildly surprised, blinking stupidly down at Natsuno.]

My my, did you go for a swim?

[Clearly a mix of entertained and curious, Ebalon leans against the railing, propping his elbow against it and his chin in his palm.]

[Damn it, he has audience. It's a few moments before Natsuno catches his breath, and a few more before he can smooth back the irritation and embarrassment from his face. He drops the floatie and climbs to his feet, leaning against the rail.]

Obviously. [He discarded the food when he realized he had no choice but to swim back, but he still has a water bottle. Natsuno takes a long sip.]. Wasn't worth it.

To my understanding, we are effectively trapped here. I believe most of that sensation of "being trapped" comes from an assumed lack of land masses anywhere within our destination so far, though... I wonder if there's some sort of barrier or other magical anomaly keeping us aboard, huhu.

[He hasn't had time to research it, and in any case, Ebalon isn't a great swimmer anyway. He'd prefer not to drown, thanks.]

Considering your reaction, is it fair to assume there's no way to swim out to shore?

[Human stamina has done more impressive feats than that. But, if there's something keeping them physically within the vicinity... that's another issue.]

No.

[He squeezes water from his hair and scoots a little to a fully sunny spot. Might as well take advantage of the weather to dry off.]

It's a barrier, like you said. Once you swim far enough, you can't go on.

[A frown. A sigh. Ebalon leans further against the railing, taking up something of an almost-dejected pose.]

As far as spacetime anomalies go, a barrier surrounding an isolated area isn't uncommon, especially if whoever set it up is aiming to trap people... [He taps his hand against his chin thoughtfully.] ...though, it begs the question of why all of us are here in the first place. Why we are trapped, and why we are trapped somewhere so luxurious. Were I to trap someone, I wouldn't pick somewhere so well-stocked, huhu.

...

Other than that, you haven't seen anything particularly unusual, have you?

Out there? No. Just calm ocean.

[He frowns, considering Ebalon's words. There's a lot to take it there.]

Maybe the luxury is part of some mind game. [Friday promised to tell him if he "made it." Natsuno tilts his head, glancing at Ebalon.] Do you know a lot about "spacetime anomalies?"

I know enough to say with certainty that we are trapped within one.

[He knows more than he wants to say he knows.]

Where I come from, "cracks" of a sort can form in the world — pockets of an interdimensional chaos that threatens to encompass the land. There are tales of people being trapped within them and never escaping, but similarly, one must cross these pockets to get into the other realms. Journey of said chaos, known as Henir, is almost entirely undocumented. Huhu... many don't survive, you see.

[He shakes his head, adding,]

But I have not sensed even a shred of Henir here, so you could say this is another anomaly owing to a different phenomenon.

[Natsuno listens quietly, filing the new information away to mule over later. He doesn't necessarily trust it, but he also can't rule out possibilities. The last few months proved him that any story can turn out real.]

So anomaly among anomalies? [Sure, why not.] You say that trapping someone in these things isn't uncommon. What's the common way to break this kind of barrier?

There are a few common ways. The first is to find the spellcaster and dispose of them — which assumes the spellcaster themselves is within the dimension one is trapped within. Uncommon, yes, but possible. Oftentimes, jailors will check on their captives, because it is very possible for captives to escape. Which brings me to the second way to escape — casting some sort of counter-spell, teleportation magick, or otherwise finding a way out through perhaps an unstable portion of the barrier or dimension. Not every spell will be without fault.

[He huffs, looking somewhat defeated.]

The latter assumes that we can categorize this spell into something decidedly faultless. If there is an easily-exploitable crack somewhere within this dimension, it will be hidden, which is operating under another assumption that this is a spell that was casted and not a chaotic spacetime anomaly operating under its own guidelines, like Henir does for my world.

[Take a shot every time he says "anomaly". It's the word of the hour.]
