[open] do not fear, for even if you should meet a most bitter and tragic end
Who: Fio, her plush bear Judith, and YOU!
When: Early August only, before the event. Most prompts take place in the evening. I might change this to the rest of the month catch-all later, but we'll see.
Where: All around the cruise ship. Prompts include upper decks (deck six or seven), Chatterbox, Scoops. Wildcard option available.
Summary: A little girl tiredly wandering around the cruise ship in the evenings for distractions and her failed attempts to pull all-nighters. I finally wanted to establish her regain, which is her nightmares! More information about that can be found on the original announcement post here.
Warnings: Possibly a lot of death/murder mention in brackets and if Fio's pushed to talk about anything. A majority of the warnings apply to Fio's dreams, since these dreams are memories that focus on sin. They'll be clearly noted in the prompts prior to dream mentions.
Notes: The first post is just meta text and the actual open prompts will be in the comment section. I default to brackets but I'll match!
■ AUGUST 1ST — after the pirate pool party (tl;dr meta text / click here to skipthe cutscene below for the open prompts)
[ While the pool party continues on into the night, around 9PM is when Fio is back in her cabin, having taken her leave early as she does with nearly every party. After neatly tucking away her clothes in the closet, she notices a box tucked away in the corner. A gift picked up from the sundries shop and long forgotten for nearly over a month.
Despite her heavy exhaustion, Fio takes the time to open her package. She removes the wrapper with extra care, neatly placing the paper aside. Finally, the second that she removes the lid, a brilliant glowing fragment of light drifts out. Her hands reach for it, almost as though she can't resist an unknown urge to pull the radiance to her chest... then the light's gone, as if she absorbed it. Fio doesn't feel any different. Except for an unexplainable sense of dread. Is this what she thinks it is? Nothing else can be found in the package. She grabs her stuffed doll and burrows underneath her blankets, drifting off into slumber...
What she doesn't expect is to start dreaming again, the first nightmare after months of peaceful nights. (cw: patricide, child and spousal abuse, alcoholism)
...Clattering of dishware. A drunken man striking his wife, as his teenage son looks on. The boy follows his father out onto a dock during a rainstorm. He takes a rope and strangles him. A couple of crashes from the storm, accompanied with a flash of lightning—the imagery flickers and changes. The boy's gone and in his place are the large tentacles of a sea creature violently strangling the man—
Fio sits up suddenly, tears running down her face. Frantically, she grabs for her phone, scrolling through her contacts.
Room 117. ...Then 114. Or 109. If not call, they're either next door or a few doors down.
What time is it? For a long while, she stares at her contacts list. They're going to worry about her again. And what are they supposed to do? They can't do anything about it. In the end, she doesn't call anyone. She collapses back in bed, burying her face in her pillow. ]

[ Ruby doesn't get her own, very mundane nightmares as much as she used to, but they still happen sometimes—more so since getting here, actually, probably because she's not as exhausted as she usually is. So that's why she's up and about, wandering the halls of the ship until her head clears, and how she comes to pass Scoops.
It's considering having some ice cream herself that makes her pause. Sort of a nostalgic idea—remembering being a kid and how cool the idea of being able to have ice cream whenever you wanted, even after 'bed time', was. She's putting the thought aside (she's 17, now, she should be more responsible, right) when she actually hears the faintest sound and peers in properly. Sees Fio, sleeping so uncomfortably.
Oh, dear. She immediately goes over and after hesitating just a moment, oh so gently shakes her. ]
Um— hey, hey.
no subject
Her tired gaze first drifts over towards the older girl next to her. Someone she has never spoken to before, so her exhausted stare lingers on Ruby. She's not sure how to react right now. ]
Uh... umm...
no subject
[ Ruby both looks a little sheepish and very much non-threatening, for what it's worth, even raising her hands away once Fio's awake and trying to give a reassuring smile. ]
Hey, sorry, I know you don't know me, but you looked like you were having a nightmare and I didn't want to just leave you like that. Are— are you okay?
no subject
I'm- I'm okay now... it's just a bad dream and it made me a little sad. [ Fio's nightmares are a little different than others, but it's not like most people know about that. She smiles awkwardly. An attempt to reassure the other girl right back, though she still sounds a little shaky. ] My name's Fio. Thank you for waking me up.
no subject
Well, nice to meet you, Fio, I'm Ruby. [ the fact she still sounds a little shaky isn't lost on Ruby, but she's not a pushy person, she's pretty good at being gentle about things ] Bad dreams suck a lot, I'm sorry; mine always throw me off for a while. That's kind of why I was up and about to even notice you.
[ Of course she has no idea how different Fio's nightmares are, but... she sounds sympathetic, at least, and though she doesn't want to ask if that's why Fio was out here at Scoops herself, she wants to leave that open in case she was and wants to say so. ]
You must be pretty tired to fall asleep with ice cream still to eat, huh.
no subject
[ Fio's usually more cheerful, but the smile she puts up now is rather weak. Yeah, she's pretty tired. She's not really good at masking anything, really.
The exhaustion's been accumulated from the past few days of trying to stay up longer, as if it would stop the nightmares from coming. She doesn't want to tell her that. ]
Um... did you have a bad dream too? Do you wanna sit here with me?
no subject
Thank you, [ Ruby smiles, ] colour's important in my world, so a lot of people have pretty names based on them.
[ Hers being one of the more obvious ones, not all are, but... it's still true. She's named most likely for the red in her hair. ]
I did, I have the same bad dream from time to time. I'm used to it, but it still wakes me up, so... [ she shrugs, here she is ] so, yeah, if you don't mind some company...
no subject
[ She's curious, but she doesn't want to pry. Fio tends to avoid too much talk of the bad parts of her own dreams, usually opting to find the happier parts, if any. ]
Um... maybe you could tell me more about your world? The things that you like about it. Happy things.
no subject
[ It's funny, you tell even the chronic optimist to think of the happy things about home and her brain goes momentarily blank. Most of what she's talked about with other people has invariably come down to the bad things about home, the inherent danger and the things that help offset it—the Grimm and the Huntsmen, Salem and her team fighting her, things like that.
There are happy things. Just... oh, Brothers. ]
Well, where I come from is called Remnant, but I grew up in a little place called Patch that's a really beautiful island. It was me, my dad, and my sister, and our Corgi, Zwei. Who is... the silliest, cutest dog you ever did meet. He charmed even my hardest to win over friend.
no subject
Even in her tiredness, Fio attempts to sit up straight, a faint sparkle beginning to show in her dull eyes. This is an invitation to tell her more. ]
You had a doggie? I don't think I've seen a corgi before...
no subject
I did! He's still running circles around my dad, I'm sure. I think I have some old photos of him, actually...
[ She digs into her pocket and pulls out not her ship phone, but her phone from home, navigating through to her photo storage and pulling up a photo of Zwei getting belly rubs on a couch. ]
There, [ she holds it so Fio can see ] he's very silly.
no subject
She opens her mouth slightly in awe, easily endeared by the image. ]
Wow, so this is a corgi. [ A giggle. ] He's adorable! I would've never been allowed to keep pets around. You're so lucky.
no subject
[ Ruby definitely takes quiet note of that, wondering what the circumstances were, but whatever they were they probably aren't in the spirit of trying to focus on the happy things right now, so she just... takes that note. ]
My dad adores Zwei, you'd think he was his third kid sometimes. He only gets the best food and all the attention he could want. [ she flips through a few more photos of Zwei doing various silly dog things ] Once, dad sent him to our school so we could look after him whilst he was on an assignment and we had to sort of... try and hide him, which didn't really work.
no subject
She watches fondly as Ruby shows her more picture, stifling a giggle at images of typical pet antics. Her eyes lift for a moment, a curious gaze up at Ruby. ]
...Did you get in trouble? [ Full of questions, she doesn't wait for an answer. ] Who else is in your family? A brother? Sister?
no subject
No, we didn't, he actually came in handy on a mission we went on not long after, somehow. [ the dog is... basically indestructible, somehow, don't ask how even Ruby doesn't know ] And there's my big sister, Yang.
[ She flips to a photo with both Zwei and Yang in. ]
She's the best big sister you could ask for, really. We don't have the same mom, but that's never mattered to either of us. My mom looked after us both and then Yang has always looked after me. She's super cool and I'm not saying that just because I'm biased, heh.
no subject
[ The word "mission" gives her the impression that she doesn't live the typical mundane school life that Fio knows of.
Then the photo changes again, Fio looks back down to focus her attention back on the screen as Yang shows up. It must be nice, growing up with a sibling. She had always wanted a brother or sister, though there's probably more people on the ship now that she can look up to like siblings. ]
Your sister looks really pretty.
[ Such beautiful long fluffy hair... ]
no subject
Sort of! Technically I'm a Huntress, but I've been doing a lot of adventuring recently, I just finished crossing a whole continent a couple months ago.
[ Which was a very very long and arduous trip, but it was also definitely an adventure. Before that she was in school, of a sort, but... well, the school's not there anymore. ]
She is super pretty, isn't she? I don't know how she handles all that hair of hers but she hates having it cut. Me, I can't handle mine if it gets past my shoulders at most.
no subject
[ It fascinates her whenever she learns about others having a bit of adventure in their life. Maybe her trips to The Cage in her dreams are an adventure, but in her own world... she would never get a chance to venture out beyond her town.
And now that they're talking about hair, she finds herself staring at Ruby's... there's a lot of passengers on the ship with interesting colors. ]
Your hair's pretty too. [ Hm. How does she describe it... ] It's... dark and then it gets bright red!
no subject
Monsters, mostly! Sometimes we track down criminals, but that's sort of secondary.
[ Sort of in that it's honestly been a lot more of what Ruby's been doing lately, if you reduce what's happening with Cinder, Watts and so on to its bare essentials.
She smiles and tugs a lock of her own hair, ] Aw, thank you. The longer it gets the more red there is, my mom's was the same. And I like yours too, it's very cute.
