[OTA] Man of Steel, Pray and Kneel
Who: Murderbot and Friends
When: Mid-November
Where: A little bit of everywhere
Summary: Snacktime, Naptime, Recess
Warnings: None yet
1. But I gave you life! [Buffet and other restaurants]
A body must be sustained, or performance reliability drops. Murderbot knows this.
Food has flavor. Murderbot also knows this.
Look, early on in the stomach-having experience, Murderbot found dinosaur chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese and declared those 'safe' foods and generally rejected most of everything else on the ship because...because it wasn't ready to expand yet. Something was safe and something became familiar and something soon became a comfort food. But it's been a few months of this. Murderbot is now ready to start trying new things.
It's not hard to tell that's what's going on, either, as the cyborg begins loading plates at the buffet with tiny sample servings of everything, or taking things at Mikabo one at a time in single plate portions, or even visiting Scoops to try a single spoonful of everything available (except the long pig).
Perhaps you can suggest combinations of food or offer context for some of what's going on (like that gravy goes on potatoes instead of being spooned directly into one's mouth). Or perhaps you just want to watch its experiments.
2. What else could you do? [Pool Deck, Night]
The stars are a lie. The stars have always been a lie.
But on a cool breezy summer night (they're all cool breezy summer nights), lying out on a deck chair under them and staring up isn't not a little bit relaxing.
Murderbot isn't flying any of its drones right now. It's not paying attention to everyone and everything around, just for this moment. It's here wholly in itself, eyeing the universeless sky, and feeling very small. Which is okay. Sometimes small is a good thing. Sometimes you want to wrap the blackness around yourself like a blanket and just be.
Of course, if left alone for too long, eventually its eyes slip closed. There may be a soft sound heard from the cyborg, if one walks past. A low, rhythmic rumble paired with a hushed little puff. Murderbot...is snoring.
3. To do what was right! [Around the Ship, previous CR]
The time has come for a change, a subtle shift in perception and a very tiny assertion of preference. If your character is someone in the habit of referring to Murderbot as Rin, expect to be approached at some point in this month.
"Do you have a moment?" It sounds a little uncertain, its posture an apology.

She flips the back of her cloak up as she sits herself on the bed so she can do so without without sitting on it. Because sitting on your cloak sometimes leads to garrotting yourself with it.

Ruby accepts the offer with a smile and shuffles close enough to share properly without bumping up against it and— oh, wow, seriously, what are the odds?
This reaction is going to look terrible for a moment and she knows it even as the wide-eyes turn into a startled burst of laughter that she has to quickly stifle.
"—oh, Brothers, sorry! Sorry! I'm not laughing at the question, I'm— I was going to ask you about that. That's the thing, the thing I was going to ask you. Kind of, you know, from my perspective and— okay now I'm rambling."

"Someone else I know kept getting a little confused about who I was talking when I said 'Rin', and she uh— suggested I should ask what your actual preference was, next time I had chance."
That's not a totally accurate recollection of what Erin said, she rather specifically said it had expressed a preference, but... close enough.
...this is still probably enough to give away who it was, though, huh.

Yeah, it can make a very good guess who, but. But. That's weird, that someone's caring about its preferences behind its back like that.

"I will." Firm nod. "And I'll happily switch to SecUnit, don't worry. That's a totally fair thing to ask. When I picked Rin, before, the only inorganic... anyone, I'd ever met was that friend of mine, Penny? So I sort of just... operated under the assumptions I was used to with her and never questioned it. But you're not her. Obviously. So."
She shrugs a little. They're different people, with different feelings and approaches to how they interact with the world as someone artificially created.

And luckily though she'd probably struggle to pick up that joke with some, she's sort of getting in-tune with SecUnit's mannerisms after this long, so she almost immediately just giggles.
"I apologise for my extreme human-ness, it won't happen again. Case in point: IIII didn't even think about that, that you do have actual like... squishy parts too. Penny's all synthetics." Beat. "Well. Except her Aura? Which was a surprise, actually..."

Ruby wriggles a little in place to get comfortable like a little bird or something of the like.
"It's one of those magic-y things." She really has just given up on trying to call it anything else, at this point... "A personal forcefield. When you had to come pick me up, back at camp, it was because I'd popped mine. It comes back but... anyway, it comes from our souls. And Penny is the first synthetic being capable of generating an Aura."

"I think it's only natural to feel something about it, and just as natural to not know what." She chews on her lip a little, her eyes also stay on the screen. "...it's weird for you, isn't it? Things like that. Things that people would say mark you a person."
She didn't miss that 'I'm not a person' back during early November. In some ways it was familiar ("I'm not a real girl.") but in others, it felt... different. With Penny the right thing to do had always been to remind her that she was just as much of a person as any squishy human. With SecUnit it doesn't seem like it's that simple.

Ruby's gaze flicks its way for just a moment as her eyes widen, before settling back on the screen. A very clear sense of realisation settles into her body language. "...oh. Oh. So, if you accepted the first as true, then..."
Because if it did [matter], you'd break, right?
She sighs, deeply. Sympathetically. "...yeah, I— I hear you. It means facing down certain things that change..." everything? "a lot."

"Honestly if I told you that you should try, I'd be a major hypocrite, considering how long it took me to start thinking about implications in my life. Some things are just... too big. You can't touch them until you either feel like they're not so scary anymore, or you decide facing it is more important than the fear."
If she'd tried to unpack a lot of what she's starting to unpack whilst she was still at home, she would've just... crumpled. Even here it took months to look it in the face. And none of that feels so big as this, as 'if I accept my personhood it means I was a victim of lifelong systemic abuse'.

She thinks its a fair assumption she's not the only person it wanted to ask. She knows plenty of people used Rin.
