[semi-open] if we're on our own in the great unknown

WHO: Eddie Munson & OPEN (with closed starters for Steve & Chrissy)
WHAT: December catch-all (reunited with his guitar, jamming in the theater, catching up with Chrissy, and a coffee date)
WHEN: December pre-excursion
WHERE: all and sundries, theater, playback, sand dollars
WARNINGS: None to start, will update in subject lines if that changes
NOTES: Will match prose if you prefer!

1. i saw the light (sundries) - ota

    [ There's excitement in the air! A package with Eddie's name on it is apparently waiting for him, and even though he is absolutely expecting the worst, he still bursts in with a flourish of unmitigated energy. Which he tries to stamp down, lest he gets his hopes up, but after waiting patiently in line, his package is presented to him in all its glory.

    It's pretty obvious what it is, even without unwrapping it, but that doesn't stop the excitement with which Eddie tears the wrapping paper off to reveal his guitar, his pride and joy, his sweetheart.
    ]

    Holy shit, holy shit, holy shit! [ Anyone within earshot will hear Eddie's excited cry as he hugs that damn guitar to his chest, practically dancing around the store with it. And, without watching where he's going, he spins to dart right out the exit and towards the theater to try it out --

    and stumbling right into some poor soul who probably thought they were just going to run in, grab whatever it is they needed at All and Sundries, and leave.
    ] Uh, sorry, sorry, just, kind of in a hurry here. [ He gestures to the guitar which he is now strapping to his back for safe keeping. ]

2. waveforms (bellona) - ota

    [ It seems the theater is becoming a frequent haunt for Eddie, but now he has yet another reason to visit. It's weird being on a stage again, with his guitar strapped across his chest, but it's even weirder without a band behind him.

    Still, that doesn't stop him from playing.

    He starts with a few warm ups, because it feels like it's been too long. Then he slips into a familiar song, one that he spent way, way too long practicing until it had been eventually unleashed on the Upside Down. It seems fitting that the song that had lured a bunch of bats away from the Creel House would be the first song Eddie plays on his guitar once more. Almost like he's picking up where he left off.

    If he notices that there's an audience, he might take requests. But don't be surprised if he doesn't know most of them, especially if they were released after 1986.

    Of course, if a recording is available, Eddie just might learn it by ear, if one were to ask nicely.
    ]

3. this is the place (playback) - closed to Chrissy

    [ Now in much better spirits with the return of his guitar, he's finding himself a lot less closed off. He hadn't meant to, but after their run-in at the Infinite Spirit Halloween, he had kind of been not going entirely out of his way to run into Chrissy.

    That's not to say he was avoiding her, just.

    He didn't want to be a constant reminder for her, just as she was sometimes for him. But he's finding it a little bit easier to cope, so he's hopeful that maybe it's the same for her. And it's entirely possible she had managed to adjust a lot faster than he did and he had been inadvertently avoidant for nothing.

    He shoots off a quick message to her, asking if she wants to meet up at the arcade, because it seems like a good place to meet, nice and casual and with the excuse of messing around with some of the games while he waited so he doesn't have to be standing around like a fool. Should Chrissy choose to meet up with him, she might find him at the skee ball machines, just messing around since he has no notion of actually beating the high score.
    ]

4. shine love glow (sand dollars) - closed to Steve

    [ There are only so many places that two underage teenagers can hang out on this godforsaken vessel (so much for a fake ID) but Eddie is determined to have as close to a normal experience as he can muster. And, okay, he's not really one to actually go on dates, usually, but when in Rome, right?

    Forget about the fact that this is very much not Rome, or anywhere near close to it. Still, the mere fact that they're not in Hawkins, and can actually do something like this without fear of getting harassed...it's nice. And Eddie's going to take advantage of the very obvious privilege they have by milking it while they can.

    So, yes, he's not exactly dressed the way he would normally be, but it's the best he can do with his limited resources. His hair is partially pulled up into a half-ponytail and he's managed to cut the sleeves off one of the Tommy Bahama flannels to create something of a vest, and while he's still mourning the loss of his Hellfire shirt, he at least feels a little closer to himself (thanks in small part to the return of his guitar, now sitting back in his cabin where he hopes it will be safe until he can return to it).

    He's sitting at a table in Sand Dollars, because coffee and tiny pastries seems pretty damn good for a first "real" date, and because it's gotta be pretty hard for the ship to manage to screw this up. That isn't to say Eddie hasn't already come up with a multitude of scenarios in which this date could go wrong.

    Still, that hasn't stopped him from messaging Steve and asking if he wants to meet him for coffee.

    On a date.

    Oh yeah, he's doing great at this so far.

    And now, he just has to hope that his nerves don't get the better of him as he's tapping out a rhythm with his rings banging against the table while waiting for Steve to arrive and put him out of his misery.
    ]

2. waveforms (bellona) - ota

[personal profile] crushed_pearls 2022-12-06 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Erin had come to practice - she doesn't exactly schedule hurdy-gurdy time - but finding Eddie here fucking shredding was a very pleasant surprise. She moves more quietly than normal, not wanting to disrupt his playing, and is down near the orchestra pit when he draws to a close; Erin greets him with enthusiastic applause. "You weren't kidding, youngblood! That's the good shit."

"I'm rusty myself, you're in good company. A hurdy-gurdy showed up for me!" Erin gestures vaguely. "It's back there, on its amp. Mind if I come up?"

Erin puts her hands on the stage and vaults up in a smooth motion, swinging her feet up and getting to standing in a shaved second. She dusts her pants off briskly before going to get her instrument, along with a chair from backstage.

The amp doesn't seem to be plugged into anything, but Erin hooks the hurdy-gurdy up to it anyway and settles in her seat before beckoning Eddie over to flip open the cover and show him the way the keys connect to the hammers.

"It's not exactly a one-man band, but the cover can be used for percussive sounds in addition to everything the wheel's doing or not doing, the external strings...it's not an efficient design, exactly, but this baby's more instruments than it looks like." Erin pauses, thoughtfully. "...Odd, isn't it? When it comes to weapons or like, tools, right, the more things it's trying to be the worse it is at all of them. Like a multitool is kinda a shit knife and kinda a shit set of pliers and kinda a shit screwdriver but it's all of 'em. But this here isn't a bunch of other shit instruments, it's...itself. Different from the sum of its parts."

"Not yet, but she does need one." Erin strokes the wood, fondly. "...Penelope's a beautiful name. Your mom a musician too?"

"I can imagine," Erin murmurs. "...My mom didn't get me into music but believe it or not I used to be a giant nerd, nose in a book all the time. She taught me to love history and that got me all the way here to this hurdy-gurdy, eventually. She passed when I was thirteen."

Erin sighs, wistful and sad. "I think I'll call her Circe. The sea witch."

"She sure did. Local ancient Greeks try to envision what it would be like to have women who hate men as much as their men hate women, fail to learn a single lesson from it." Erin quirks an eyebrow at Eddie. "It's been mentioned to me that you may be a fan of the honorable Jolkein Rolkein Rolkein Tolkein, known primarily for being an extremely shitty college professor but possessed of a small following for an obscure novel series."

It's sarcasm, yes, but it comes from a place of love.

"He does! And his poetic sense is masterful, I'm just honor-bound to give his ghost shit for slacking off on his real job to construct Sindarin." Erin flashes a goblin grin. "When I was younger those books were very near to me, and the ones I love more these days wouldn't exist without them."

Erin pauses. "You know the library has some stuff from one of his college students? She was like the sole reason he couldn't fuck off to write while still getting paid."

"I just got done reading one to my girl." Erin taps her chin thoughtfully, regarding Eddie with Clear Thought. "I think...yeah, you want Howl's Moving Castle. It follows Sophie, a hatmaker's daughter who falls in with the wizard Howl - a lazy con man selling spells in many nations, at least until they go to war with each other and all try to draft him."

"It's a very different take. Tolkien set out to write a sweeping epic, something like Beowulf or the Odyssey, but Howl's is more concerned with the small people who actually live their day to day in such a world. 's good stuff." Erin allows herself a wistful sigh. "A lot of folks back home don't read fantasy any more, given that, y'know, we are fantasy. I hear 'I own a mirror' a lot."

"An escape, or a reflection. Sometimes you gotta make something larger than life so you can stare at the details." A wistful little smile. "You do fantasy games at all? Y'know, your Zelda, D&D, all that?"

CW Satanic Panic

[personal profile] crushed_pearls 2022-12-25 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"...God damn, dude. Was Jack Chick the mayor? Or - wait." Realization steals over Erin, and she tilts her head in that odd, birdlike gesture. "...Mister Eddie, are you and the folks you know from the eighties as reckoned in the Years of Our Lord, by chance? Say, in the middle of a giant panic about Satanic cults supposedly everywhere that literally eat children?"
crushed_pearls: (Default)

[personal profile] crushed_pearls 2022-12-27 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm sorry you got done like that, Eddie." Erin rubs at her knuckles, and 'looks' away. "...The Satanic Panic is in the past from where I'm sitting, but it never really went away. It's just the newest form of very old conspiracy theories, y'know? In my time we were gearing up to have it again before us fairies got exposed to the public and became the new scapegoat for a certain class of Christian. At least I'm actually a witch, dumbasses couldn't spot Satan if he shook his succulent ass in their faces."

"You'd be surprised how many problems magic can't solve. Power is basically a currency; it's good to have enough to live on, but it can't buy everything."
