[one by one, they are brought out of the dream, finding themselves in a brightly lit world of sand and broken glass, of familiar faces and audible relief.

as they pass through the crew quarters, they may notice that some tubes seem to be unoccupied, merely sand and empty air.

when they finally push open the heavy door, they find themselves on deck zero. the familiar terrain of the Serena Eterna. they never really left at all.

it is still and quiet; none of the usual ghostly presences can be found anywhere on the ship; in fact, it seems as if there’s barely enough of… whatever it is to keep the lights on, and they’ll find that all internal locations are dimly lit, making it difficult to search them. and they will be searching.

because Fio wasn’t in any of the tubes.

and neither was the Captain.

Er, no, we've never spoken about it directly, but I am a terrible and somewhat shameless gossip. Probably did have that detail muddled up with someone else, dear Max, my sincere apologies. To answer your question, her name was Florence. And she had two darling little sons, Beetle and Charlie. Not his real name, of course. Beetle, I mean, not Charlie, I called him that because of his fascination with bugs.

Only the best things, [ that's a wink, ] but yes, I was very lucky. Have a terrible soft spot for children, I just think they're the funniest little ducks. Ah- my sister never did appreciate me stoking his budding interest, however- the year I got him a butterfly net for Christmas she threatened to stick it somewhere unpleasant, net-end first.

I bet it was still worth it to see Beatle so happy, though. My sister was going to school to be a surgeon so I bet she'd have some really colorful threats she could make at me too if she was motivated enough.

Not that I imagine she'd have much reason to, you do seem a lovely fellow. Although I suppose it's just different with siblings. Florence was a graceful, compassionate woman who also filled my bed with earwigs on one occasion, after I broke one of her dolls.

[Max is used to old beings with old fashioned opinions, enough that, while it does catch him by surprise, he lets it roll right past him in the same breath. He'll take the praise for his amazing sister in the spirit given. While also blushing at the compliment to himself (thankfully hidden beneath fir.)]

I mean, I still did my fair share to annoy her. It's, like, mandatory for siblings to antagonize each other, isn't it? Ew, earwigs though! She must have really liked that doll. Gross!

It really is a shame no one here can meet Jenny. I wouldn't wish being here on her, though. Not even if it meant getting to see her again after so long. If she ever does show up I'm going to be in so much trouble.
