He often has that effect on people, and he's used to being stared at, even back in his world. It's not often that the richest, most well dressed person in the room is an Omnic. Though usually the stares come with an undercurrent of derision, and that hasn't happened on the ship yet. He's expecting it's only a matter of time.

"Have an interest in dead bodies?" because he certainly wouldn't stick around to help anyone if they were being messily murdered. "Considering the volume of the music you may not find out about it until tomorrow when someone is missing. I'm not sure I'd be able to decipher gunshots at this point."

No one has informed Max that people who die come back, and he will be aghast when he finds out.

"I am a doctor," Watson clarifies. "It would be more accurate to say that I have an interest in preventing dead bodies. Bit of a useless task, here, given the unnatural impermanence, but I feel obliged to try, regardless."

He shrugs, vaguely. Saying so aloud makes it all seem... silly.

"There are good deaths and bad, I suppose. At least I can prevent the bad. My name is Watson, by the way. Dr. John Watson."

"Ah, that makes sense then. I wish you luck." Though considering he's had guns pulled on him multiple times now, he's fairly certain that the doctor is up against some slim odds there.

"Good and bad? I suppose there's slow and quick - I'm not certain what I would categorize as a good death." He's never really thought about it, other than avoiding death as long as possible. Preferably forever. No one really knows how long an Omnic will last before the circuitry literally falls apart, and he's determined to find out himself.

"Maximilien. A pleasure." He nods politely, hands clasped behind his back.
lightconductor: (tell me all about it)

[personal profile] lightconductor 2022-04-29 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Quick, I think, is preferable. Even if they do come back the next day, there's no sense in sentencing anyone to a slow, painful death of gangrene or suffocation or some such thing. Call me sentimental, if you will."

Watson shrugs, though it's a vague, helpless sort of gesture.

"Forgive me if the question is impertinent, Mr. Maximilien," because it's been nagging at him and he really wants to know, "but are you entirely mechanical?"

"I'd agree with you there, quick also may mean you don't even realize it's happening." He's not sure if he'd prefer that, he likes to always know what's happening, but.. perhaps that would be an exception.

"Pardon, come back the next day? Does that happen?" Usually people stay dead, it's generally accepted to be the desired outcome from killing someone. Expected even.

He does preen slightly from being called Mr. Maximilien - that's a nice bit of respect he's not entirely used to. Which softens him slightly from snapping back something harsh. "Yes. Completely."

"Oh, that's fascinating," Watson says, appreciatively. "You are the first, ah, artificial person I've met who did not look more or less human, so I wasn't at all sure."

But yes, that's a rather... important fact that he just accidentally brought up. He gives a rueful smile. "Yes, here, people do come back. I haven't any notion of how, at least not yet, but regardless, it does happen. The deceased wake up in their beds the following morning."
makesomedeals: (Another Time)

[personal profile] makesomedeals 2022-04-29 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Artificial person actually sounds much more pleasant than some of the things he's been called. At least it's still 'a person' even if artificial does imply a level of falsehood. He'll allow it.

"In my world I'm called an Omnic. But I've yet to meet anyone else here who's heard of that." He doesn't sound too broken up about that, it's probably for the best, honestly.

"Then what's stopping everyone from killing each other all the time knowing they'll simply wake up tomorrow and it wouldn't have mattered?"
lightconductor: (eyebrow)

[personal profile] lightconductor 2022-04-30 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"An Omnic," Watson repeats, clearly attempting to memorise that word. "Yes, It's quite new to me, but people such as yourself simply don't exist in the world I know, by any name."

Which is why he's so fascinated, perhaps. Still, Max has posed a very serious question, one which Watson isn't sure he has the answer to.

"Simple civility? The knowledge that one has to face one's victim the following day over breakfast? An unwillingness to experiment with the situation so early? I really haven't any notion." He shrugs. "Perhaps given time that will break down, but I am not eager for that."

Fashionable suits are in a way, timeless, but the overall cut does lend itself to being from a much earlier period in time than Max is from. Though considering everyone else he's met, it wouldn't surprise him if Watson was from a hundred years in the future but on a planet he'd never heard of.

"I'm from the year 2076 so I may be in your future. Or a completely different world as seems to be the case with many who are here." Who knew there were a zillion different worlds all populated with humans somehow. Curious.

"Ah, relying on morality to keep the peace seems to not be a long term solution," He says with the confidence of someone who barely has any. "If whatever keeps us here doesn't want us dead then everyone killing each other might be a true act of defiance."
lightconductor: (my pleasure)

[personal profile] lightconductor 2022-04-30 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"2076?" Dates like that still surprise him a little. "It was 1892, for me. If you are from the future of the world I know, well. That's a very long way off."

Watson takes a sip of his drink. "And no doubt you're right. Perhaps it simply hasn't been long enough for us all to descend into immorality and barbarism."
makesomedeals: (Let's negotiate)

[personal profile] makesomedeals 2022-05-02 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
"1892. So you predate," gestures around at the ship in general. "All of this then?"

He's not sure what's worse, this place seemingly being somewhere in the past with none of the modern amenities he's used to, or having been brought so far forward there's technology that's beyond understanding.

"How long have you been trapped here? I'll start biding my time until the chaos begins."
lightconductor: (calm)

[personal profile] lightconductor 2022-05-02 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"Most of it, yes. Perhaps not all of it, but most of it."

Watson gives a wry grimace. There's something almost embarrassing when it's put that way. Nobody likes to have it underlined what a relic they are.

"Just shy of two months, now," he continues. "I don't believe anyone was here much longer than I was, though. A few days, perhaps. Nothing substantial."
makesomedeals: (Tie)

[personal profile] makesomedeals 2022-05-03 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry Watson, he can't help it. And he hasn't quite grasped the whole 'humans caring about the passage of time because they're mortal' thing.

"So the ship was empty prior to that? That's... Well that's rather odd. Especially considering the size of the ship. Has it ever docked anywhere for supplies?" He's tried to see land in any direction from the deck but it seems like they're always in the middle of the ocean with nothing in sight. But it must need to dock occasionally for food and water for all these people. For fuel. Restocking. Right?
lightconductor: (calm)

[personal profile] lightconductor 2022-05-03 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
"Perhaps not empty, but anyone who was there then no longer is, and no one knows anything about them. Alternately, those who were there are not admitting to it."

Which, well, he's not sure.

"We have not stopped anywhere in the entire two months," Watson continues, happy to share this information. He sees no point in hiding information from anyone. "We have seen no land. We have seen one other ship, a wooden sailing ship that kept pace with us, and while the captain of that vessel stayed with us for some weeks, I don't believe anything so mundane happened as a resupply."
makesomedeals: (How's your luck?)

[personal profile] makesomedeals 2022-05-04 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
"They'd be wise not to. Information is valuable and who knows what we might do to get it out of them." Torturing people for information isn't his method of operation, but it certainly is for others. Always something to keep in mind when talking to anyone, especially unknown strangers.

"What happened to the captain of the other ship?"
