Ava appreciates the unique texture to the cup as she runs her fingertips over the dips, although she's still suspicious enough of the drink until she tastes it. And then gives a bit of a surprised sound of approval. Clearly he knows what he's doing behind that bar.

"Oh. I've been... you know, around." Not really, and mostly lurking about invisible when she does leave her room. But here she is, making an effort for whatever reason. "You've been well?"

"Yeah, mostly. Trying to keep my head down and not draw too much attention. Experimenting with new drinks and foods. Playing catch-up with modern tech and such." He shrugs. "I'm doing alright. You?"

Ava nods at the valid approach, has been trying to do much the same. With a few slip ups here or there that reinforce her need to stay invisible and out of the way.

She takes a heavier drink from the cup. "Fine, yeah," she lies for both of their benefits. She doesn't want a repeat of the last party. "This is good. I'd tip, but..."

"But I'm not making money and you don't have any. How about sharing lunch with me sometime. As friends. Somewhere quieter than this, where we can actually properly catch up?"

He sounds hopeful. Not that he wants to court her (he has his hands full in that regard), but he does want to be a friend to the shy dame.

Her hands tighten on the copper mug, expression a bit strained. Last time she tried dining with somebody, she cried.

"I'm not a particularly good friend," Ava warns, but it's not a no.

"It's hard to get better at it without practice. I used to be pretty bad at it, myself, believe it or not."

You know, back in those three years when he didn't leave his building once and didn't really let anyone know him for fear they'd have to deal with the Black Note.

"Had you?" Ava sounds somewhat surprised, hadn't gotten any awkward sort of impression from Johnny at all.

"As much as I know you're right, I don't like it. But fine. Lunch. As... friends." She still doesn't feel as if she's done anything to qualify for the term.

"As friends. Don't worry, I'm not trying to court you or anything--not that you're not perfectly nice, of course." He lets out a bit of a nervous little laugh.

"That's the second time you've made it clear in your lack of interest in me. It truly doesn't need repeating," Ava mumbles into her drink. Her self image is crumbling apart just fine on its own, thanks. That she's getting twice rejected by somebody she never even tried to pursue is just further confirmation that any of that romance stuff just isn't for her.

"But I'm sure you have far better options for company. Makes me worry you have ulterior motives," she accuses, a guarded expression. That's more what she's used to from people, makes more sense to her than anyone attempting friendship.
