"Ah, so I might actually get to monopolise your attention for a little while," Watson says, leaning back against the bar with his drink. "To be honest, I'm not quite sure what to do with that, given how public we are, but give me a little time to think it over. I'm certain I am able to come up with something."

"I don't know how to dance to the type of music Jinx is playing, so that's probably out. I heard there's some sort of games, though? Or we could just sneak off entirely." He's not sure, but no matter what happens, they'll enjoy themselves. It's a great night.

"Yes, the games."

Watson grows serious for a moment, his eyes flicking over towards the poker game going on. "I am attempting to not see the card games, even if there's no actual money involved." He says this with a forced lightness, as though this were a very natural joke to make. He has to say it that way. "Sneaking off with you sound much preferable. Tell me, in your world, do men casually dance together at parties?"

"Sometimes. Especially young college men who aren't yet worrying about marrying and producing heirs. It's seen as normal to have a college sweetheart who's a man, and then go on to marry a woman--though working class men and women often don't worry about such things at all, and will dance with whoever they please. And this seems like the sort of party where we can get away with it."

They are the most subtle of boyfriends, truly.

"So upper class responsibilities are just as important, then." Watson grunts. At least that's not something he's ever had to worry about. "I suppose the scandal of a married man with a male lover is rather different in Gallery. Well."

It's an interesting view of a world that's close enough to his own that he can actually imagine it, with some very charming differences.

"I suppose I could brave enough to dance with you in public," he says. "Though this is hardly the music for a waltz, yes."

"You're right, it's not. But you and I can learn to move to this new music, or figure out something completely our own. There's no one else from our time and our worlds to tell us we're wrong, is there?"

It's a playful offer, his eyes gleaming with humor.

"This is true," Watson says, smiling over the rim of his glass. "And there wouldn't be anyone to throw us in the dock, and this not even a molly-house where such things are expected."

Sometimes that idea makes him feel giddy.

"I cannot promise I wouldn't make a hash out of it, but I do have half a mind to ask you to dance with me, even if that would ruin any pretence of secrecy."

"We're roommates and friends. Beyond that, it really isn't anyone's business. I'll hold myself back from kissing you on the dance floor. Can you do the same?"

Is that the lightest note of a challenge, there?

"I can be a perfect gentleman," Watson says, "or at least I can appear to be. Perhaps the thing to do is dance with several other people, for whom I care less, to distract from the dance that is rather more meaningful."

He smiles, innocent.

"You do that, and come back when you've built the proper foundation for our dance to seem innocent. And John?" The use of his given name is deliberate. "Have fun out there, but don't tire yourself out too much."

He chuckles, grinning with far more warmth than would be unsuspicious.

"Have no fear, I will certainly save enough stamina for you, whatever you wish me to put my energies to." Watson lifts his glass in a sort of toast. "I'll see you later, my dear fellow."
