Why do people keep asking her that question?

"I was just a wanderer." she says without missing a beat or any indication of discomfort. That's nicer-sounding than saying she'd been homeless, or a fugitive wanted for murder. However, she also learned from her conversation with Watson that saying she's a wanderer might invite people to ask where she's been, so she tries to be one step ahead.

"Although, when I say wanderer, it was more like I drifted around the same city. I was hoping to meet someone." That's not entirely false. Kouta was what kept her tethered to Kamakura when she could have wandered all over Japan before the Diclonius Research Institute started catching on.

"I see. You must have gotten to know the city pretty well, then. Did you like it there?" Sometimes, it's hard to know how to make small talk with someone.

"Honestly? Not really." She swirls her drink around absentmindedly. "The only reason I stayed is because I really needed to find that someone I mentioned before. I was indebted to him."

Just not in the sense of money.

"I never said it was a he." she says in a rather prickly manner.

Poor Johnny is just trying to be nice, but Lucy's still hurting from letting go of Kouta. Yes, she did it willingly, but that didn't mean she wasn't sad over it.

Despite her words, her getting defensive could clue that it was indeed a man she'd been referring to. Or maybe she was genuinely offended that he assumed that she was talking about a guy. (The truth in this case would be the former.)
