"Careful," he warns automatically when the man's emphatic gesture sends liquid slopping almost to the rim of his glass. Disaster fails to strike, thankfully, and even Darlington breathes a sigh of relief at that. "And you'd be surprised. I've been to some parties back home where I'd swear the entire point was to put a stop to all conversation. Never stayed long, though. Not unless I had to."

Watson puts a hand over his glass with a bashful smile.

"No, I can't blame you for that. I'm surprised I've lasted here as long as I have." He gives a little self-deprecating laugh. "But then, I do feel it's important to meet our fellow passengers, whatever else happens."

He offers his hand for a shake. "Dr. John Watson, by the way."

He can't help a look of surprise at the name; of course it's familiar, even if it's ludicrous to think that there's a connection. Still, on a ship with people pulled from all places and times, worlds both like and unlike his own, would it really be so strange to find himself face-to-face with the actual Watson? It can't be. But it could.

"Daniel Arlington," he says after a hair too long a pause, though his grip on the other man's hand is firm and steady. "It's good to meet you, and I agree. We're all here for whatever purpose, so we lose nothing in getting to know one another. Safety in numbers, at the risk of sounding cynical, though with what I've heard...it might not be that cynical at all."
