"I did hear people talking about a Captain." No one present at the party really seems to fit that description though, she she's decided he must not be present. "I don't think that woman with," Effie gestures to her face to mean no face. "You know. I don't think she's in charge."

It does seem important to know who brought them to the ship, and why. But she also worried that investigating could draw too much attention and from her experience, people in power don't like to be questioned. The concern passes across her face for a moment before she catches herself and smiles. "Worries for another time."

He contemplates her statement for a moment. She's partly right, of course. All of the gathering of information against Snow and the Capitol and how to use that information had had to be done without raising suspicions. Being too obvious only led to too much trouble. They'd had to play the game, and they'll have to do the same thing here. Good thing he's good at games.

They also can't afford to completely stop gathering information. They just don't have to be obvious about it. "I suppose you have something else in mind for tonight then."

"I thought we might try having fun for a change," and as silly as that sounds it has been a long time since either one could relax. "It's a party, Haymitch." And for once they're not being forced to watch anyone die. yet.

"Maybe make some friends," she suggests.

Effie has always had an easier time having fun than he has, the main reason being that she's had more opportunities for it, and is also more comfortable in situations like that. Making friends hasn't been as easy for him, either, mainly because he had purposely isolated himself in District 12 and he had never cared much for most of the people who lived their whole lives in the Capitol.

"Right. Friends."

She rolls her eyes. Haymitch can be charming and likable when he wants to be, which is admitted something he often actively chooses not to be.

"Don't pretend like I'm your only friend! You're friends with Chaff!" she pauses, searching for another example. "And Peeta." That one probably doesn't technically count and she moves on quickly. "People don't know you here. They're not going to be - "

Effie trails off, knowing that what she means to say is people aren't going to act like they're from the Capitol. It took years for her to realize Haymitch is just an ordinary person who experienced an extraordinary tragedy. She still has to remind herself that he can't turn that part of himself off just because they're far away from it.

"I just think people are going to like you," she finishes hastily.

He could point out that Chaff and Peeta had both been through the same thing he had, which had given them not only shared perspectives but had meant that no one had to explain anything when certain topics were avoided. He doesn't have to, though, because she seems to realize that herself. Friendships are one of the many things he's not used to cultivating.

"You might be the only one who thinks that."
