Oh, parallel, definitely. Weird and fascinating an idea as that is.

[If they were the same, for one, Lethe would have been all over the existence of a skeletal sorcerer named Skulduggery Pleasant. And Darlington had once thought Bathsheba Smith, that poor girl, contained a kind of poetry to it.]

The group I worked for specialized in spell and artifact-based magic, but we were connected with a host of other societies. The necromancers I mentioned, plus others who worked with portal magic, elemental spells, divination, perception magics...each of them had their own calling. And Lethe oversaw them all, when we needed to.

Hmm. Lots of little vocabulary lessons when talking about magic on this ship, aren't there? Would that mean you're part of a governmental body? Or is it less organized than that?

[New vocabulary is further down in the list of differences between magical systems and worlds than Darlington might have initially assumed. Case in point: he's talking to a damn skeleton right now--and the damn skeleton is talking back. The Lettermen could never.]

Not so much governmental as academic. And not even that, exactly, though the Ancient Eight are as connected to Yale as every stone and brick on campus. To the outside world, the societies are little more than secret clubhouses for the privileged, networks of high-powered alumni in nearly every field. Their only power seems to be money and connections.

[Darlington pauses, half for effect and half because his old habit of discretion is a hard one to break. Even on a mysterious cruise ship populated with people dragged from more versions of the world than he'd ever believed existed.]

The fact their members all know magic along with being high-powered players in nearly every field from the boardroom to Hollywood and all points in between, is the biggest secret of all. And Lethe House helps to keep it.

While Skulduggery is interested in Darlington's reality, it's strictly academic. He's noticed for himself just how disparate the magical frameworks are between worlds, and he's become a little too easygoing talking about it. After all, who's going to stop him, the Sanctuary? Hah! Interesting. I'm just getting used to the different sorts of realities aboard... Seems like everyone's got something different to offer, and there are a surprising number where magic isn't something secret. My own reality is a bit more like yours, although not... nearly so conspiratorial. [Except for the part where there had definitely been a conspiracy...] We keep ourselves separated from non-magical communities and have our own underground system of government.
