Welcome To The Village

Please mark all threads appropriately.

"Good morning, good morning, good morning!" A voice that sounds very similar to Friday's chirps over a loudspeaker outside your character's home. Yes, their home.

Overnight, all the passengers who signed up for this excursion have been transported to their very own personal cottages. They will awake in a bed that is familiar to them. While this home of theirs does not necessarily have to resemble the place they were born or raised, it will be a perfect replica of a place they truly thought of as their home, down to the most minute details.

The cottages are self-contained, the size of a large studio apartment so, in some cases, they may only resemble the bedroom and living room of a person's home with a shrunken-down kitchenette and bathroom adjoined. But the heirlooms of their past are here. A favorite doll? A treasured family portrait? Trinkets you have long forgotten about? All of them will be here, somehow. (All except for weapons, that is.) They are indistinguishable from the real item, down to the molecule.

After that wake-up call, the voice continues on to express that the weather will be warm and sunny, with no rain forecasted. A brass band concert is announced, to start at noon on the lawn next to the living chess set. And once that bit of news is wrapped up, lively marching band music will begin to play. And it will continue to play. All day. From every speaker...including the ones hidden in their home.

Welcome to Your Village

It only gets stranger from here. Characters may be dismayed to find that they are without any of their original clothes or belongings. They awake in conservative button-up pajamas. The closet in their home is full of the latest Village Fashion to choose from. Everything is The Village label brand, including the tin cans of food that stock the kitchen and any of the groceries you could get at the General Store.

Your ship phone rings. When you answer it, you will be greeted, once again, by the voice of Friday. "Your number, please? Of course, you have a number. Look at your badge." If they look down at their chest, they will discover a small round number badge has been pinned to their pajamas. Was that there before? It bears the symbol of a Penny-farthing Bicycle, with a number in the spokes. This is their number.

"No names here," the voice of Friday chides, "Only numbers. Number 2 would like a word with you at the Green Dome. He requests you come for breakfast. Thank you!" Before they can protest further, the line goes dead.

Some Notes:
  • No matter how many times your character tries to take off and disregard their number badge, they will always find it re-attached to their clothes again the moment they look away and look back.

  • Your characters still have their phones but now they can only make calls instead of sending texts. They also do not take or store photographs anymore.

  • If your character destroys or damages anything in their home, or in The Village it will instantly repair the way things used to on the Serena Eterna.

  • The noise from the speakers can be muffled by covering it with pillows or other creative items, but cannot be stopped entirely. (Sorry Phil)

    "Peter?"

Phil looks... uneasy, and maybe just slightly twitchy with all of the sources of music he can hear that are all off-kilter from the travel time of sound if nothing else, but that's about the worst of it yet. "What is it?"

    "Yes."

He slows his pace somewhat, noting how twitchy Phil seems. If only the news he has could make that better, but it will only make it worse.

"I'm sorry I never told you about this place. I should have. This is... the prison I was kept in before I arrived on the Serena Eterna. I know it all too well."

    “Huh.”

    Cool.

    Well.

“… Anything else I should know?”

Number 6 is startled into silence for a moment. Really? That's it? He's a little... offended, actually.

"No. I suppose there isn't. I'm sure you can guess what sort of experience you're in for."

He's just. So tired. Every month it's another fucking thing, and sure, after the clusterfuck at the end of September why not get sent to a realm that is so specifically a torture realm and is so clearly a psychological torture realm, he woke up to the Punx bedroom and currently has discordant marching band music blowing half of his thoughts out of his brain, he is absolutely feeling the terrible sinking weight that this is for both him but especially Peter but God forgive him if he just can't react appropriately to anything right now.

Which shows when Peter goes all flippant and vague because this man loves circling the bush and Phil's expression becomes suddenly piercingly frustrated, and he rubs with both hands at his face.

"I'd rather not guess." Deep breath.

Deeeeep breath. Not about him right now. "Are, are you--... can I do anything for you right now? Or later? Something--God knows I'd, if I went back..."

Number 6, at least, has the good graces to take his own deep breath, to close his eyes, and will himself to find his center. He still doesn't quite know how to answer any of that.

"I'm not sure there is anything anyone can do." Would anything actually have helped Phil if he found himself back in his own worst nightmare?

"This place is designed to break our minds. They will use our worst fears against us. They will hammer us until we get in line. You can trust nothing here besides the fact that if you don't do exactly as you're told, they will attempt to force you."

“Okay,” he says on a sigh, because of course it is. “So what do they want, then? What happens when we cooperate?”

"I wouldn't know," he says with a wry smile, "I never was very cooperative." He's proud of that if nothing else.

"From me, they wanted to know the reason I resigned from my position. Here? I don't know what they could possibly hope to accomplish. I expect that if you go along easily, they will do you less harm. Beyond that, I really don't know. If the point of this place is the same as the others, maybe it won't matter."

Ah. That's why he doesn't like being asked about that.

Phil goes thoughtful for a moment. Everything has been a Lot this morning, and staring down the gun barrel of actual pointed torture versus the scatter-shot treatment that the Captain usually subjects them to is. New, to say the least.

They're all removed from the consequences that being attached to a greater society would have, but... there's still every chance that whatever they tell is gonna get used to screw everybody else over. Phil imagines he'd never allow himself to do that, but he's also never been tortured about it.

    Torture. Jesus.

"Okay," he repeats. "Thank you for the, uh, warning." ... "If--I'll help, if you need me to. Whatever I can do. Just ask."

He can see the realization sinking in, and it grieves him. Yes, they face torture here. Real, merciless, intentional torture. There is no way to truly prepare for that. No one really knows their breaking point until they reach it. Number 6 had nearly reached his more than once in this place. That was before he had so much to lose. Before he was married. Before he adopted children into his life. And friends. They are all in danger now because he cares about them.

"There's only one thing. It's not something I ask lightly. If I should be... indisposed. Please make sure Ava doesn't neglect herself. Can you?"
    goodweather: (but not quite either!)

He nods. There’s one thing he’s good for in this world, and he knows it, too.

“If it comes to that. I will.”

"Thank you. That already eases my mind." Whatever happens to him will not be something that hasn't happened before, but this time he has others to prioritize.

"I never escaped this place. I tried for a year, at least. I watched others die in the attempt. Please be cautious, Phil. Warn others, like Darcy, to be as well. Number 2 will not hesitate to hurt any of us. And I mean that more than physically."
    goodweather: (30)

Phil breathes in. He knows himself. Physical pain is something he can tolerate--not that it's ever easier, but once you jump the empty cliff enough times, you start building a certain kind of tolerance. Psychological, though. That one is...

... he's particularly bad at that one, depending.

"I'll be careful. Promise." He reaches up to lay his hand on Peter's shoulder, offering a reassuring squeeze. "And I'll look after Ava. We'll get through this, yeah?"
    be_seeing_you: (melancholy)

    wrap!

    [personal profile] be_seeing_you 2023-12-14 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"Thank you." Number 6 mirrors that, putting his opposite hand on Phil's shoulder, too, while he attempts a strained but grateful smile.

"We will. Whatever happens, we've been through too much to be defeated now. Keep steady, my friend. We'll be remembering this over drinks before too long."
