Welcome To The Village

Please mark all threads appropriately.

"Good morning, good morning, good morning!" A voice that sounds very similar to Friday's chirps over a loudspeaker outside your character's home. Yes, their home.

Overnight, all the passengers who signed up for this excursion have been transported to their very own personal cottages. They will awake in a bed that is familiar to them. While this home of theirs does not necessarily have to resemble the place they were born or raised, it will be a perfect replica of a place they truly thought of as their home, down to the most minute details.

The cottages are self-contained, the size of a large studio apartment so, in some cases, they may only resemble the bedroom and living room of a person's home with a shrunken-down kitchenette and bathroom adjoined. But the heirlooms of their past are here. A favorite doll? A treasured family portrait? Trinkets you have long forgotten about? All of them will be here, somehow. (All except for weapons, that is.) They are indistinguishable from the real item, down to the molecule.

After that wake-up call, the voice continues on to express that the weather will be warm and sunny, with no rain forecasted. A brass band concert is announced, to start at noon on the lawn next to the living chess set. And once that bit of news is wrapped up, lively marching band music will begin to play. And it will continue to play. All day. From every speaker...including the ones hidden in their home.

Welcome to Your Village

It only gets stranger from here. Characters may be dismayed to find that they are without any of their original clothes or belongings. They awake in conservative button-up pajamas. The closet in their home is full of the latest Village Fashion to choose from. Everything is The Village label brand, including the tin cans of food that stock the kitchen and any of the groceries you could get at the General Store.

Your ship phone rings. When you answer it, you will be greeted, once again, by the voice of Friday. "Your number, please? Of course, you have a number. Look at your badge." If they look down at their chest, they will discover a small round number badge has been pinned to their pajamas. Was that there before? It bears the symbol of a Penny-farthing Bicycle, with a number in the spokes. This is their number.

"No names here," the voice of Friday chides, "Only numbers. Number 2 would like a word with you at the Green Dome. He requests you come for breakfast. Thank you!" Before they can protest further, the line goes dead.

Some Notes:
  • No matter how many times your character tries to take off and disregard their number badge, they will always find it re-attached to their clothes again the moment they look away and look back.

  • Your characters still have their phones but now they can only make calls instead of sending texts. They also do not take or store photographs anymore.

  • If your character destroys or damages anything in their home, or in The Village it will instantly repair the way things used to on the Serena Eterna.

  • The noise from the speakers can be muffled by covering it with pillows or other creative items, but cannot be stopped entirely. (Sorry Phil)

    It'd be trouble...

[She doesn't anticipate a flight to freedom, because that's not how these things work, it's never that easy - but Tayrey would take the risk for the sensation of flying, for the thrill of the joyride, for the knowledge that it'll be a poke in the eye for whoever is really behind her presence here.]

I can't ask anyone. To get into that kind of trouble. But hypothetically, how long would it take you to get from right here to airborne? Assuming no interruptions.

You know me; I have a talent for getting myself into trouble all on my own.

[She doesn't have to ask. He's in.]

Depends on if they left the doors unlocked. Good news is, we don't need a key to start her up. If we don't have to bust the door locks, I can get us off the ground in two minutes. Maybe less.

[There's a moment of silence as she runs a few mental calculations, and then she turns to him, grabbing his arm excitedly.]

I like this spot. I like this spot enough that I can tell you when we'll have a gap at least that long without any blob noticing us.

No way to tell about the locks. Let's hope they're overconfident enough to be careless.

[It's much the same kind of sudden enthusiasm she had over the space probe. Something worth doing - although this time, the reasons are entirely frivolous.]

[He's having to work hard to keep his face from giving away how excited he is now, too. Seeing that spark in her is priceless.]

These guys seem like the overconfident type. Let's do this. I'll wait for you to say go, and then we run for it. Deal?

    Deal. Stay down.

[It feels like an agonizingly long wait. Ari watches the movements of others around them, taking careful note, and counting seconds... counting...

Only one chance to get this right.]

    Now!

[An urgent whisper before she reaches to grab his hand, and starts sprinting across the grass towards the helicopter. How long since she's truly run like this? Has she ever, when it wasn't away from a threat but towards something she wanted? It's exhilarating. Almost there. All they have to do is get that door open, and then - the skies await.]

[He's off like a shot, sprinting with his head low in a way that's been perfected over years of running and ducking. His free hand finds the handle of the helicopter.]

    Hell yeah! Go, go, go!

[The door opens easily. Crichton pushes her to climb inside before he plants his own butt squarely in the pilot seat. As he's starting the ignition process, he's telling her:]

Strap in. Should be a headset hanging back there. We'll need it to hear each other. These crafts aren't insulated from noise the way you're used to.

[That said, he's reaching for his own headset too, to test it.]

[She wouldn't have guessed that. Another reason to be glad that he's here to take the lead on this. Her pride insists she'd have got the craft into the air regardless, but it's going to be a much more pleasant ride following his advice.]

    Copy that!

[She slides into the co-pilot's seat, and manages to fasten the straps of her safety harness without much trouble. Then the headset. It feels strange, but again, the functions seem logical. She taps the microphone as she leans forward, examining the switches and dials in front of her. It's deceptively similar to a Tradeline shuttle in some ways, but other readings seem unfamiliar.

No waiting for local Flight Tower authorisation here, at least.]

Ready for launch! [Eager delight in her voice.]

    Roger!

[He can hear her perfectly through the headset, all systems are green. Crichton starts that engine and a shiver of delight rolls down his spine as the familiar smell of diesel hits his nose and the roar of the engine rattles the entire helicopter to life. A few seconds later they are airborne.]

    Woohoo!!! Yeah! Ye-haw baby!

[He doesn't fly too high or too close to the barriers (not after what Arthur told him happened to the raft) so instead he points the helicopter at the Green Dome intending to buzz it like he's Tom Cruise in the beginning of Top Gun.]
    astrogator: (pic#15928590)

    [personal profile] astrogator 2024-01-22 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
[Ari's equally enthusiastic, grinning as the engine comes to life, staring out the window as they lift off.]

    It's working! We're flying!

[As happy as if she'd just invented flight! It's been so long. She understands why he doesn't head straight out into the distance; it's the same reason that she hadn't, the one time she'd had her shuttle to fly here. Her own safety might not have concerned her, but Crichton's did.

When she sees him heading for the Green Dome, she even bounces in her seat a little.]

Go for it! Give them a good scare!

[Funny story. Ari got a bundle of Earth movies once and Top Gun was her favorite.]

Oh, I will. I'll buzz us so close he'll poop his pants thinking we're going to crash into him.

[There's a heartbeat of a moment where the idea of actually doing that holds some appeal, but much as Ari is concerned for his wellbeing, he is for hers. So. They aren't doing that. But Number 2 doesn't have to know what their intentions are.

He steers them close enough that they could practically lean out of the cabin to spit on the roof. If he wasn't focused on precision flying, maybe he would. He can still shout.
    ]

How do you like us now, Number 2, you walking log of feces?!
