10th Contraption: Mawwiage

Who: John Watson, Johnny Summer, and César Salazar with Rich Goranski, Fio, and Honoria Crabb AND YOU Oh god why are weddings like this
What: The throuple getting married by... the Captain?!
When: December 11th at 7pm
Where: John's
Warnings: I believe in us! But for now, nothing.

SEATING

John's has been transformed, the seating up front rearranged in rows towards the center dias with an aisle down the middle, the piano moved off to one side. The buffet for later can be seen off to the other. Decorations taken from Spirit Halloween appear here and there–flowers taken from cavalera flower crowns, sun and moon candlestick holders from the tarot collection, festively colored tablecloths draped down the walls like curtains or banners. A sign near the entrance says "seat yourself", although the front row on one side is reserved with a ribbon across the backs.

What can't be seen is who is officiating. Or the husbands, but at least that part makes sense. The dais is empty.

THE CEREMONY

As one of the few traditions in this wedding, music announces the start of the ceremony. Rich strolls in first, trying to look professional even if he’s clearly shaking a bit as he holds the small pillow with the rings laid on it. At least he’s dressed quite smartly, Johnny ensuring his red suit is wrinkle free and his cuff links are set in place. Fio, in a winged black dress and flowery headdress, follows after the ring bearer, adorning the path with paper petals as she moves along.

The first husband to be down the aisle is none other than Johnny, in a smart charcoal grey suit with a goldenrod pocketsquare, gold jewelry, and a wreath of orange blossoms on his head; and accompanied by Honoria Crabb in her perfectly tailored black tuxedo, worn with black gloves and a white bow tie. Watson and César take up the rear, arms linked together. César is wearing an equally fancy suitcoat with his tie held in place with a ruby and silver tie pin, and Watson is wearing an officer’s dress uniform, with the sword and without the helmet, and also his good cane. All three husbands-to-be are wearing green carnation boutonnières.

AFTER PARTY

It's time to eat, dance, and party!

The seating has been rearranged for sitting at tables around the "dance" floor. Food from Windjammer has been placed on some tables for a buffet. There’s a selection of fancy cheeses and crackers, sushi, premade sandwiches, and salad with dressings on the side. For dessert, to one side there’s a table with cupcakes, cookies, and chocolates arranged in a heart. On the bar are a couple bowls of punch (including one explicitly labeled as non-alcoholic) made by Johnny ahead of time, because he's been forbidden to bartend his own wedding, much to his deep chagrin.

There’s a space set just off the dancefloor for musicians who wish to perform, the usual John’s piano (bribed into behaving with a whole pan of beef brisket from the buffet) off to one side.

[He grimaces a little. He can't argue with that, exactly.]

If I'm perfectly honest, an open relationship with a fellow soldier in my regiment would have been extremely frowned on. But surely you don't plan to be in the service forever?

Afraid so. I'm one of those damn careerists. [It's light, gently self-mocking. At this point she's a very junior officer.]

You know when you start out that probability is going to go against you someday. I always thought it'd be that - whether it was in the very next battle, or thirty years from now when I'm an established captain with a ship and a company of my own. Never planned any further than that.

[Part of this is a realistic approach to the hazards of her work, yes, but there's also a young person's inability to imagine herself old.]

But I wouldn't be there if I didn't think it was worth it.

Ah, you certainly are a careerist. I've seen your type before, and I know better than to argue.

[He sips his drink, casually.]

Of course, that particular plan is a little difficult now. We are rather short on spaceships here.

Yes. [She hesitates slightly, not wanting to spoil the happy occasion with too much serious talk - but he's the one bringing it up.]

It's an unfortunate delay, but I'll find my way out, whatever it takes. I'm not content to spend my life on this prison ship. We'll find freedom, so everyone can go wherever they like. With whomever they like. And then I'll get home. Pick up where I left off.

[That seems... improbable. And yet, Watson does not have the heart to argue about it, not here, not tonight.]

I... wish you luck in that endeavour. There is a binder of information in the library, incidentally, if you have not read it before. You might find it useful.

[And that's all he'll say about that.]

[And there it is again. Ari shakes her head.]

I've read it. I've analysed it. You're a man of science, aren't you? Some of it is useful information. Some of it is unproven, and some, by definition, unprovable. Our captor would like us to become demoralised and despairing, I'm sure. You have to consider the source of all these statements.

[She reaches up, gives him a gentle pat on the arm. It's not the time or the place for too much of a debate.] Don't lose hope, Doctor. A better future is possible.
lightconductor: (my pleasure)

[personal profile] lightconductor 2022-12-22 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, so you have seen it. I wanted to be sure.

[He manages a smile.]

If I thought a better future was impossible, I would not be standing here at my own wedding. I am not losing hope, in fact, but I do seem to be seeking it in a different place than you do.

[personal profile] astrogator 2022-12-22 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Then where do you see yourself - see the three of you - ten years from now?

[It's an honest question, not a critical one, because it's less than a week since she was suffering so much at the thought of the eternal torment that awaits them if they can't escape this ship that she could scarcely get out of bed. She needs to know where his hope lies, if not in freedom.]
lightconductor: (calm)

[personal profile] lightconductor 2022-12-25 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
[He's silent for a moment. This is actually a rather personal question, it seems to him.]

Ideally? Some new place, where I can forge a life, with my husbands, and our son. I do think it is likely that it's true we cannot go back, but escape elsewhere, perhaps -- that's what I hope for, what I will strive for. What that life will look like will depend a very great deal on where we escape to, but I want these people in my life.

Perhaps that's a large part of why we've done all this. [He gestures to the wedding as a whole.] It's a promise to each other that whatever happens, wherever we go, we go together.

[personal profile] astrogator 2022-12-25 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
[It was a personal question, really. Ari gets very frustrated when people won't listen to her critique of that binder, when they accept everything written in it without considering the unreliability of certain sources, or the lack of evidence. She won't argue, because it would be very inappropriate right now, but she does look quite solemn.]

Then I hope you accomplish exactly that, together, and that it's just as happy as today is for you. You deserve that.

As for me, I'll find my way home, or die in the attempt. [It's the unvarnished truth, and she gives him a brave little smile.]
lightconductor: (calm)

[personal profile] lightconductor 2022-12-26 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[He smiles faintly; it seems a very cavalier attitude towards her own life, but it's the sort of thing he might have said once, as a very much younger man. He is not the John Watson who joined the army all those years ago.]

I wish you luck in that. And perhaps I am wrong. I have been wrong before.
