10th Contraption: Mawwiage

Who: John Watson, Johnny Summer, and César Salazar with Rich Goranski, Fio, and Honoria Crabb AND YOU Oh god why are weddings like this
What: The throuple getting married by... the Captain?!
When: December 11th at 7pm
Where: John's
Warnings: I believe in us! But for now, nothing.

SEATING

John's has been transformed, the seating up front rearranged in rows towards the center dias with an aisle down the middle, the piano moved off to one side. The buffet for later can be seen off to the other. Decorations taken from Spirit Halloween appear here and there–flowers taken from cavalera flower crowns, sun and moon candlestick holders from the tarot collection, festively colored tablecloths draped down the walls like curtains or banners. A sign near the entrance says "seat yourself", although the front row on one side is reserved with a ribbon across the backs.

What can't be seen is who is officiating. Or the husbands, but at least that part makes sense. The dais is empty.

THE CEREMONY

As one of the few traditions in this wedding, music announces the start of the ceremony. Rich strolls in first, trying to look professional even if he’s clearly shaking a bit as he holds the small pillow with the rings laid on it. At least he’s dressed quite smartly, Johnny ensuring his red suit is wrinkle free and his cuff links are set in place. Fio, in a winged black dress and flowery headdress, follows after the ring bearer, adorning the path with paper petals as she moves along.

The first husband to be down the aisle is none other than Johnny, in a smart charcoal grey suit with a goldenrod pocketsquare, gold jewelry, and a wreath of orange blossoms on his head; and accompanied by Honoria Crabb in her perfectly tailored black tuxedo, worn with black gloves and a white bow tie. Watson and César take up the rear, arms linked together. César is wearing an equally fancy suitcoat with his tie held in place with a ruby and silver tie pin, and Watson is wearing an officer’s dress uniform, with the sword and without the helmet, and also his good cane. All three husbands-to-be are wearing green carnation boutonnières.

AFTER PARTY

It's time to eat, dance, and party!

The seating has been rearranged for sitting at tables around the "dance" floor. Food from Windjammer has been placed on some tables for a buffet. There’s a selection of fancy cheeses and crackers, sushi, premade sandwiches, and salad with dressings on the side. For dessert, to one side there’s a table with cupcakes, cookies, and chocolates arranged in a heart. On the bar are a couple bowls of punch (including one explicitly labeled as non-alcoholic) made by Johnny ahead of time, because he's been forbidden to bartend his own wedding, much to his deep chagrin.

There’s a space set just off the dancefloor for musicians who wish to perform, the usual John’s piano (bribed into behaving with a whole pan of beef brisket from the buffet) off to one side.

"It is, yes. Sharky is always complaining that there's not enough people to go in with. Perhaps we will need to do another music night sometime." She's not sure what sort of music they could manage, but she could at least go in and flip through and see what music it offered. "At least with the ghosts being back, I wouldn't have to run everything myself."

But she can understand not being sure how to explain the music. She's not certain she could do a good job of it herself. "Would help to have some non-fiction on the boat, I suppose. But perhaps a fictional book might have the workings of an instrument inside of it."

She is carefully minding others as she turns them on the floor. "There are a few musicians on board it seems. Perhaps we can ask if they know any of the answers to your questions. I do not fully understand Erin's instrument as it is. The name is enough to garner questions."

"Right? I've never heard anything quite like it, or felt anything in a similar shape, but it's extraordinary. Like a violin and then something else at the same time..."

She laughs, moving easily into the turn.

"So many people here are artists in one form or another. Poets, musicians, painters, and the rest...the creative spirit is undimmed, really. It must flourish in uncertainty."

"I like the sound of it. We never used to have anything but classical music at the parties they made us work." She doesn't remember doing them as often, but she's certainly been to a couple of them. Meant to show off how curious and unusual they were.

"Yes. I have been learning drawing because I feel like there's no reason not to. Of course, part of it was to annoy the Captain, so perhaps it started as something that wouldn't really bother him in the end, but I keep doing it just to have parts of home with me outside of my mind." And also to throw knives at very poor pictures of the Captain, but she'll leave that to her and Marc.

"I'd say I was curious about what you managed to replicate, but I fear I wouldn't get too much out of the images."

Just a matter of life, really.

"But...is it odd if I say I'm glad for you, that you found something you like to do regardless of its origin?"

"It would be certainly difficult without being able to see them. I wonder if there is a way to let you experience them in some form." She doesn't really know very much about art, hasn't ever had the time or the luxury to explore much outside of her world until the ship.

"I do not think so, no. I think I'm glad that most people get to experience life and things that they would not have otherwise. Westworld wasn't really known for letting the Hosts learn new things. My creator used someone else to wake me up. And that was the first time I knew anything different from what I was programmed to know." A beat. "So I think it's nice to have time to learn new things. Even if the environment is...questionable sometimes."

There's another brief pause before she asks, "Is there anything that you enjoy doing? Or a new thing you've had time to do here?"

There are things Maeve mentions that Helena desperately wants to question her on, stories there she wants to hear. But none of it seems right for a dancefloor, for a happy occasion - the sorrow hinted in the words is a depth she won't plumb. Not today, not before it feels right.

So instead, she smiles, and answers the question instead.

"A few things...I've gotten to take up swimming again. And there's a lot more time to write - or at least, scribble down ideas that may or may not be written into something greater. And dancing, as it turns out."

Maeve is not, perhaps, the most open, but she's at least stopped hiding things in general. Mostly she doesn't want the Captain to have the joy of being able to put personal things out there before she's ready for them to be. But it's probably for the best not to get into Westworld tonight. For the sake of the wedding.

"That sounds lovely." She smiles. "Dancing with others is certainly entertaining. And we don't get to do it as much. But if you ever want to learn more, I'm happy to show you whenever we have the time for it after this." A beat. "What sort of things do you like to write?"
