YOU'RE THE NEXT CONTESTANT

WHO: the Captain + You
WHAT: contractually obligated price is right game
WHEN: 11/18, like nightish?
WHERE: Bellona Theater
WARNINGS: N/A, currently

[you've heard the announcement, the sound of Friday's cautious optimism as she spoke it. you've waited all day. now, it's time for the game.

the amount of effort that has gone into this production at Bellona can be safely defined as “minimal.” there are three podiums, with three slate boards and three pieces of chalk. there is another podium, currently empty, next to a plain folding table. there is a tablecloth draped over the table, covering a lumpy, inscrutable shape.

the most remarkable thing is the giant wheel set up on the other side of the empty podium. the slices of the giant circle are colorful, but also completely blank. the Captain actually spends 30 minutes prior to the start of the event simply sitting in front of it, back to the audience, and spinning it, listening to the loud clacking noise pick up and then die down again, before spinning it once more.

clackclackclack clack clack. clack. clackclackclackclackclack.

it's gonna be a long night.]

[Belatedly, Ari Tayrey realises it may be seen as a little impolite to have a cozy little chat with one of her competitors and exclude the other. She smiles at Ava.]

I'm Tayrey. Peace and prosperity to you.

[After a momentary hesitation] What's a bitcoin made out of?

[it's not being left out of the conversation, it's this whole delaying of the game and prolonging their suffering of being on stage while people keep shouting!

nervous smile back.]

Math. Virtual mining stored on the blockchain encryption.

[Ari's oblivious; she doesn't really mind being there. Being the center of attention is fine when she's the one who decided on it.]

Interesting! Some of our Companies use similar methods. [Sometimes. The security vulnerabilities meant that it wasn't always advisable - but she's not sure if Ava's interested in currency discussions. She's happy just to wait for Min-Gi to decide on his guess, if preferred.]

It's actually highly unethical and damaging to the environment, its farming a huge strain on the power grid, leading to global shortages of computing components and contributes to actual, physical mining. But that's money, for you. The only difference is that bitcoin is decentralized from the banks, so its worth is purely speculative and the longer we draw out this conversation the more its value will fluctuate.

Anyway, I hope the economy collapses.

[What kind of bizarre and inefficient planet did she come from? Ari supposed it didn't matter. Anyone who wished for economic collapse was just trying to be provocative. She smiles again, sweetly.]

Then I won't take any more of your time. I'll wish you the best - but if your homeworld does fall into economic collapse, an interstellar megacorporation might come along, buy the whole thing nice and cheap, and fix it up.

Even if I could return, I have no desire to. The Avengers can deal with it in their way of making things worse. I'm sure one day everything will be owned by Stark and Roxxon and they'll be forced to live in a cyberpunk dystopian nightmare. And I'll be here, eating free shrimp.

Hey- hi. Excuse me. I for one would also like to hear about the digital currency. Does a blockchain need the shrimp or is that a ship specific thing?

[constrained by her own no murder rule, and the presence of an audience... leans forward into the microphone:] The shrimp are absolutely required. Without them backing the virtual currency, the ocean economic system will collapse and the blockchain reaction will destabilize global trade resources. While the US has a large secret shrimp reserve under a base in Antarctica in case of emergency, I leaked the location to Sokovian loyalists in exchange for diplomatic immunity.

[Min-Gi leans into his microphone.]

Your honour I enter my guess as eight thousand shrimps, please.
