[you've heard the announcement, the sound of Friday's cautious optimism as she spoke it. you've waited all day. now, it's time for the game.

the amount of effort that has gone into this production at Bellona can be safely defined as “minimal.” there are three podiums, with three slate boards and three pieces of chalk. there is another podium, currently empty, next to a plain folding table. there is a tablecloth draped over the table, covering a lumpy, inscrutable shape.

the most remarkable thing is the giant wheel set up on the other side of the empty podium. the slices of the giant circle are colorful, but also completely blank. the Captain actually spends 30 minutes prior to the start of the event simply sitting in front of it, back to the audience, and spinning it, listening to the loud clacking noise pick up and then die down again, before spinning it once more.

clackclackclack clack clack. clack. clackclackclackclackclack.

it's gonna be a long night.]

The fish have hands!?

[ If there's any manner of conversation or thinking going on stage right now it will surely be disrupted by Darcy's bark of confusion and. Maybe outrage? Is that this feeling? ]

Of course they do! They're mermen?! They're literally fish monsters! Is that seriously so hard to believe compared to the occult?!

Then why do they need legs!? Or hands!? Nothing else that lives in water needs legs, especially not fucking fish!?

[ If Darcy had the self-awareness of a newt she'd be able to recognize the hypocrisy in yelling at Rita about something pertaining to her world, but as it stands Darcy doesn't. ]

Millions of years ago, nothing walked on land until evolution turned fins into legs and they walked out of the ocean. Or it could have been genetic mutations to start, then they learned to live with and optimize it.

( resident nuclear wasteland kid weighing in. )

[Rita's ready to yell right back, something about frogs or salamanders, maybe, only to receive a surprising backup from Clarke. Two against one! Even if it's still weird how much they're suddenly getting along now.]

Exactly! They just how they are, so quit being so weird about a few monster limbs!

[ Wow, really, Clarke? Betrayed once again by the Serena Eternia's resident snake. Darcy rolls her eyes- fish with legs still don't make sense thank you- and huffs- ]

Fine, dropping it, whatever.

( contrary to popular knowledge, pythons and boa constrictors have been known to have leg bones buried in the muscle fibers near the end of their tail and — )

It'd make so much more sense than how this creature's been painted, from an evolutionary standpoint.

( big shrug at both of them, gonna continue lugging her painting. )
