[you've heard the announcement, the sound of Friday's cautious optimism as she spoke it. you've waited all day. now, it's time for the game.

the amount of effort that has gone into this production at Bellona can be safely defined as “minimal.” there are three podiums, with three slate boards and three pieces of chalk. there is another podium, currently empty, next to a plain folding table. there is a tablecloth draped over the table, covering a lumpy, inscrutable shape.

the most remarkable thing is the giant wheel set up on the other side of the empty podium. the slices of the giant circle are colorful, but also completely blank. the Captain actually spends 30 minutes prior to the start of the event simply sitting in front of it, back to the audience, and spinning it, listening to the loud clacking noise pick up and then die down again, before spinning it once more.

[Enjoy it while it lasts. This is Ari high on a sense of victory; she'll be back to normal soon enough.]

It's all calculated guessing, I suppose.

[That's a long list of uses, and Ari realises now that while the berries may have been less expensive than all the peculiar artworks, on this ship, in their situation, they carry more value.]

Thank you! They'll be good for minor pain, then. When what's in the infirmary would be too strong. Probably more pleasant than pills, too.

( that's mildly perfect, clarke's lowkey still running of her weed party hangover; it's done wonders for the generalized and personality defining anxiety that's set to slowly creep back in and become overwhelming once again. let's enjoy the moment.

clarke's enjoying it via shrugging, and doesn't mind having lost here; her new painting is disgustingly expensive (she thinks? what is money??) but not the worst piece to have walked away with. she shrugs at the polite thanks, considering this nothing more than passing on earth skills — as her generation had been fated to do. )

In the middle ground between liquid cocaine and horse urine, and ibuprofen — ...yeah, it'd probably do the trick. It's a good win, I really hope it's not cursed and you can turn it into something useful.

[astrogator]

[Ari laughs.] I was told I should try cocaine if I had the chance. [Sort of. Not exactly for medicinal purposes.] I'll definitely pass on the horse urine. Although flinging it at people who are bothering you might work.

[She smiles again.] I'll do my best. If it's poisoned, I'll find out soon enough. [It's lightly said. Ari accepts the possibility, intellectually, but it's not going to let it ruin her fun today, and if she dies she'll wake up tomorrow anyway, right?]

( that is an alarming statement of cocaine intent, and clarke responds with a wordless look of: uh please don't. which is to say, all eyebrows, drawn towards the middle of her forehead, and lightly parted lips from shock. not that she can really talk, having used it for very medicinal purposes but also getting absolutely blazed off non-medicinal marijuana like, two weeks ago. )

...right. Well, let me know if the berries live up to their historical fame.

( and please don't die while doing so, sometimes if you die by your own fault here, you wake up sans a kidney. )

[Ari observes that look of Clarke's, but it's not unduly worrying to her. Everyone had their own cultural taboos, and for a lot of the people here, she'd noted, they related substances. Ari, meanwhile, would try most things at least once.]

I will. I'll be the test subject, but once they're proven safe, maybe you'll try some tea?

( i'll be the test subject strikes something deeper in clarke's chest than just a casual avoidance of cocaine. and if elderberries were an unknown substance, she'd go so far as to slap the prize out of ari's hands rather than let that happen. but earth skills lessons haven't truly failed her yet and thus the majority of her apprehension weighs on if there's some sort of... trick. catch. unintended consequence. )

Just... be careful with that, okay?
